Series history:Â Lakeland and Marian are long-time rivals in volleyball dating back to the early years of the Muskies program in the 1970s. Series records are incomplete but Lakeland has dominated the teams' meetings over the last 20 years, winning 29 of the last 31 matchups dating back to 2002. The Muskies won last year's match just under a year ago Oct. 22, 2021 on the road in Fond du Lac in four sets, 28-26, 26-24, 16-25, 25-17, and have won six straight over Marian. The Sabres' last win over the Muskies came back in 2016 in a four-set victory at home in Fond du Lac.
Lakeland last time out: Won at Alverno 3-1 Tuesday
The Muskies hit a speed bump at the end of the second set but controlled the other three sets in a 25-16, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18 win over the Inferno in Milwaukee. Katie Metzler and Susana Stevens both finished with 15 kills, Kelly Swope also hammered home 13 kills and Emily Duchow set a career high with 49 assists as Lakeland posted a .292 attack percentage, its second-best mark of the season. Brelynn Scoles also finished with 10 kills and three of the Muskies' 10 service aces and Maeve Sullivan added 23 digs.Â
The Muskies have rarely had short work this season-just eight of their 25 matches have been decided in three sets, and this was Lakeland's 16th four-set match of the season. The Fish also improved to 9-3 in their last 12 matches and stayed in position for a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament, remaining in a tie for fifth place with Benedictine with three league matches to play. Metzler also continued a tear over her last five matches, as she has hit .508 with 70 kills and just nine errors, averaging 15 kills per match in that stretch.
Marian last time out: Won at MSOE 3-1 Tuesday
The Sabres also were victorious on the road in Milwaukee in four sets Tuesday, winning at MSOE 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-11. Serina Pehowski finished with 16 kills, a sterling .600 hitting percentage and six blocks and Reagan Jasica piled up 29 digs. Marian posted 10 blocks and nine service aces, held the Raiders to a .054 hitting percentage, and won a true road match for the first time in eight tries this season.
Marian is 4-6 in the NACC and is not far from a better record, having lost five-set matches to Concordia Chicago and Wisconsin Lutheran. The Sabres started slow losing their first eight matches of the season but have been better in conference and still have an outside shot at qualifying for the NACC Tournament.
