Series: 43rd meeting, Concordia leads 22-20
The series between the Muskies and Falcons began in 1980 and has been played every season since, including the 2020-21 season when both teams played limited schedules in the spring due to the COVID-19 virus. Lakeland has won seven of the last eight in the series, including a 49-32 win last year at home.
Charl'Tez Nunnery passed for four touchdowns and current Muskies assistant coach
Brice Kensey caught 17 passes for 180 yards. The Falcons' last win in the series came Oct. 6, 2018, when CUW snapped Lakeland's four-game winning streak in the series with a 17-0 victory as the Muskies committed five turnovers in Mequon.
Cheese Bowl: Lakeland and Concordia also are playing for the Cheese Bowl trophy for the 31st time. The Cheese Bowl originated in 1992 as a traveling trophy for the winner of the two teams' annual game when they were the lone two Wisconsin members of the old Illini-Badger Football Conference. Lakeland and Concordia were conference rivals in the IBFC from 1980 through its final year in 2007, when both joined the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference for football. The Cheese Bowl series is tied 15-15 with the teams having split the first 30 Cheese Bowl games but Lakeland has won the last three games, holding the trophy for over three years now since taking it back with a 44-0 win Oct. 12, 2019.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Concordia Chicago 43-23 last week
The Muskies at last tasted the spoils of victory for the first time this season and on Homecoming, as a massive offensive output and strong defense led the way. Lakeland piled up nearly 700 yards of offense, outgaining the Cougars 682-250, including 468 yards rushing.
Robby Michael rushed 22 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns and also passed for 214 yards and two scores, both times connecting with
Chris Crawford for his first two collegiate TD catches.
Devon Harris also rushed for a career-high 173 yards and a touchdown. The defense was led by
Agustin Diaz, who set a career high with eight tackles, with five of those tackles for loss including a sack plus a tackle for a safety.
Jayson Wilder also added an interception as the Muskies won for the first time this season while outgaining an opponent for the fifth time in six games.
Concordia last time out: Won at St. Norbert 28-21 (OT) last week
The Falcons found a way to knock off one of the NACC's two teams undefeated in conference entering last weekend, taking down the Green Knights up in De Pere. Concordia built a 10-0 lead in the second quarter and led 21-7 going into the fourth, but St. Norbert rallied and tied the score with a touchdown with 19 seconds left in regulation. The Falcons took the lead in overtime on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback James Linn, and then on defense forced a fumble and recovered to end the game. CUW won despite being outgained 372-210 and advancing for just ten first downs in the game. The Falcons' defense forced five turnovers, including an interception by Glenn Pearce returned 35 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
About the Falcons: Concordia Wisconsin is off to a 6-1 start to the season, with its lone loss coming to Benedictine. The Falcons have gotten there despite being outgained on the season by opponents (354.6 yards per game to 335.0). CUW's defense has forced 17 turnovers, though, a number tied for 11th-best in NCAA Division III, and also has allowed 21 points or less in their six wins. The Falcons have guaranteed their fourth straight winning season overall under head coach Greg Etter, in his 15th year leading the program. CUW also raced out to a 6-1 start last year before falling to the Muskies, a result that started a three-game skid to close the season.
Honors for Robby, Auggy: Lakeland's win also resulted in the team's first individual weekly honors of the season for the team. Michael was named the NACC's offensive player of the week, while Diaz was passed over for the NACC's defensive award but instead picked up a national honor, named to D3football.com's Team of the Week, an all-star team of top performers by position across the country in Division III. Both received their respective honors for the first time in their careers.
Among best in the country: Robby Michael has rushed for 751 yards through Lakeland's first six games, a number that has him on pace to record the eighth 1,000-yard rushing season in school history. The freshman QB also is posting rushing numbers among the best in Division III so far this season. His average of 125.2 yards per game ranks seventh in the country, and his yardage total is tied for 11th-best in D-III. Michael also ranks 11th nationally with an average of 7.3 yards per carry, and his 274.5 yards of total offense/game is 29th in Division III.
With the running of Michael,
Devon Harris and
Jatron Bevly earlier this season, Lakeland also ranks No. 6 in D-III averaging 297.8 yards rushing/game. The Muskies are also 22nd in the country in total offense with an average of 477.7 yards/game.
Four in a row: Lakeland senior cornerback
Jayson Wilder picked off a pass against Concordia Chicago last week for his first interception of the season. It marks four straight seasons intercepting at least one pass for Wilder, who has six interceptions in his career. He is the second Muskies defensive backfielder with such a streak; fifth-year senior safety
Andrew Cardiel has an interception in five consecutive seasons.
