Series history:Â The Muskies have dominated the all-time series with MSOE, one that dates back to 1981, but the Raiders have put a dent in that the last couple years. Lakeland had won ten straight meetings until MSOE earned a five-set win March 14, 2021, in a designated non-conference match in the pandemic-abbreviated 2020-21 season. The Raiders then followed that up with a five-set win last season Oct. 12, 2021 in Milwaukee. Lakeland records are incomplete, but it is known that the Muskies won 26 straight matches in the series between 1995 and 2009. The Muskies' last win over MSOE was a four-set win Oct. 30, 2019, in what is also the team's last meeting at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to #13 UW-Eau Claire 3-0; Lost to St. Benedict (Minn.) 3-1 Saturday
The Muskies concluded an expected tough weekend at UW-Eau Claire's Sandy Schumacher Tournament finishing 0-4 over two days, including a 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 loss to the hosts and defending NCAA Division III national champion UWEC plus a 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15 loss to St. Benedict.
Katie Metzler was named to the all-tournament team after posting 31 kills on the weekend.
Hailey DeGrave also added 32 kills in the tourney,
Kelly Swope totaled 30 kills and 17 digs,
Maeve Sullivan contributed 53 digs and
Emily Duchow totaled 103 assists.
Lakeland also is playing for the second time in its NACC schedule, having lost to Wisconsin Lutheran College on the road in four sets last week. The Muskies have lost 8 of their last 9 matches, but to an exceptionally difficult schedule. Five of those eight losses have come to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools and the combined overall record of the nine teams Lakeland has lost to this year is 75-29. The Muskies also have won at least one set in five of their nine losses so far.
MSOE last time out: Defeated Carroll 3-2 Saturday
The Raiders earned their first win of the season Saturday with a hard-fought five-set win at home over the Pioneers. MSOE outlasted Carroll 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11 as Ana Knutson finished with 16 kills, Alexis Hicks piled up 28 digs and Amanda Yackley totaled 49 assists. Like Lakeland, the Raiders have opened the season with a tough schedule that included No. 3-ranked Calvin (Mich.), Carthage and Concordia Wisconsin. MSOE opened NACC play last week falling in three close sets to St. Norbert, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22. The Raiders last year finished 21-12 and 8-5 in the NACC, setting a program record for wins and appearing in the NACC Tournament for the first time since 2008. A pair of all-conference players graduated from that team, and MSOE was picked eighth in the NACC's preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors.
