Series history:Â Lakeland and Maranatha Baptist continue their long-running series in men's soccer that dates all the way back to Oct. 1, 1979, a 5-1 Maranatha win. Series records are incomplete, but in meetings documented in Lakeland records the Muskies hold a 24-11 lead over the Sabercats (formerly known for many years as the Crusaders). This is the teams' first meeting since Sept. 8, 2018; in that last matchup, Lakeland posted a 3-0 victory here at Taylor Field as Ryoto Kinoshita, Shosei Suzuki and Alex Kelly all scored goals. MBU's last win over the Muskies came the year prior, a 4-1 win at home in Watertown as Nathan Akers scored two goals for the Sabercats while John Bentler scored the lone goal for Lakeland.
Lakeland last time out: Tied Finlandia 1-1 Sunday
The Muskies finished with their second 1-1 draw in two days to start the season.
Jordan Davis-Troller scored his first collegiate goal, but the Lions scored to tie in the second half as Lakeland's first two games of the season were largely mirror images of each other. The Muskies scored early in both games and controlled play early, but their opponents gained the advantage in play in the second half and eventually scored a tying goal.
Ben Taylor made his first collegiate start in goal and made two saves in the first half while
Carson Galla made four saves in the second half.
Maranatha Baptist last time out: Lost to Martin Luther (Minn.) 2-1 Saturday
The Sabercats opened their season Saturday at home but fell to the Knights. MLC scored the first goal in the 33rd minute and added a second goal in the 60th minute, but Maranatha made a push late and scored its first goal at 81:17 of the match as Joseph Green scored with assists from Robert Lemon and Grant Kirchner. The Sabercats were outshot 20-12 with Aaron Jones leading the team with four shot attempts (three on goal). Goalkeeper Ian Belyo made five saves.
