Wilder repeats as first team selection to lead Muskies all-NACC football picks

Senior cornerback Jayson Wilder (Milwaukee, Wis.) was again named a first team all-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference selection to lead Lakeland University as the conference announced its postseason football awards Monday afternoon.

Wilder was named to the first team for the second straight year and leads six Muskies to receive honors from the NACC. Jake Leclaire (Sr.-Stuart, Fla.) was named to the all-conference second team, while Robby Michael (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.), Shamond Oliver (So.-Phenix City, Ala.), Karlis Ozols (Sr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Zach Welnetz (Sr.-Kiel, Wis.) all were named honorable mention.

Wilder was picked for all-conference honors for the third straight year over, after also being named honorable mention in 2021. He started all eight games he played in, missing two games due to injury, and the fifth-year senior saw his statistics decline this year, the numbers a victim of his own dominance at his position as teams largely chose not to throw at him.

Wilder finished with 20 tackles (17 solo, three assisted), including two tackles for loss. One of the top defensive players in the conference, he broke up four passes and finished without an interception after posting 14 pass breakups and four picks a year ago, and he recovered one fumble.

Leclaire received all-NACC recognition for the first time after a big season at his defensive line spot. He finished with 66 tackles (50 solo, 16 assisted) with 11 tackles for loss including 1.5 sacks. He also added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while starting all 10 games for Lakeland.

Leclaire finished second on the team in tackles and tackles for loss. He also is 10th in the NACC in tackles for loss and for his career has 20.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

Michael was named an honorable mention selection for the second straight year after winning the conference's top freshman award last year. The quarterback faced injuries to him and some of his supporting cast to start all 10 games and finish completing 169 of 330 passes for 2,214 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also rushed 169 times for 780 yards and nine touchdowns, leading Lakeland in all three categories.

Michael had an up and down season but at his best was as good as any player in the conference. He threw for a career-high 463 yards against Concordia University Wisconsin early in the season, and in the season finale passed for 315 yards and four touchdowns in a comeback win over Eureka College. Michael also rushed for at least 100 yards three times.

He ranks third in the NACC in passing yards and fourth in touchdown passes, and also is fifth in the conference in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. His 2,994 yards of total offense (299.4 yards per game) is second in the NACC, less than three yards/game behind leader Jaelen Ray of Rockford University.

Also on the offensive side, Welnetz was the anchor on the offensive line at the center position starting all 10 games. He also became the unquestioned veteran leader on the line by the end of the season, for by the end of the season Lakeland started four freshmen along with Welnetz on the line.

A four-year starter, Welnetz has started all 29 games he has played in his career. A native of nearby Kiel, he received all-NACC recognition for the first time.

Oliver was named to the all-conference team for the first time after a strong sophomore season playing in the secondary. He led the Muskies with 67 tackles (55 solo, 12 assisted) including 7.5 tackles for loss. Oliver also intercepted two passes, broke up three passes and forced two fumbles.

Oliver finished with at least seven tackles in six of Lakeland's final seven games, and also tied for the team lead in interceptions and tied for third in tackles for loss. He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Muskies' win over Concordia University Chicago after posting eight tackles, three TFLs, an interception and a forced fumble.

Ozols continued to be one of the Muskies' top playmakers on defense and received all-conference recognition for the first time. The senior linebacker finished with 51 tackles (34 solo, 17 assisted), with 12 tackles for loss including 5.5 sacks. He also added an interception returned for a touchdown plus a fumble recovery.

Ozols led Lakeland in TFLs and sacks and posted at least one-half TFL in eight of the team's 10 games. He also is tied for fifth in the NACC in sacks and tied for sixth in the conference in tackles for loss, and in his career has 25.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks.
