Hall, Johnson star as Muskies move to 4-0 in Florida with wins over Augsburg, Defiance

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. – Skylar Hall (Jr.-Negaunee, Mich.) pitched another gem and Madi Johnson (Jr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) led a number of players having good days at the plate as the Lakeland University softball team picked up two more wins Monday on the second day of its spring break trip to Florida.

The Muskies downed Augsburg (Minn.) University 5-0 in their first game and then came back to defeat Defiance (Ohio) College 8-4 in the second game of the day. Lakeland moved to 4-0 in Florida through four games of its 10-game trip, and is now 4-2 overall on the season.

Hall was dominant in the opener against the Auggies, pitching a complete game one-hit shutout. The junior struck out five, walked three and faced just three batters over the minimum in a 78-pitch masterpiece where Augsburg got its only hit with a single to lead off the second.

Hall also worked with a lead for almost the entire game, with the Muskies scoring early with a run in the bottom of the first. Peyton Harlow (Fr.-La Porte, Ind.) singled with one out, stole second and came around to score after Juliana Hall (Sr.-Portage, Ind.) reached on a throwing error.

Lakeland also added two runs in both the third and fifth innings. Juliana Hall doubled with two outs in the third to score Hannah Volom (So.-Portage, Ind.), and Johnson singled later in the inning to score Hall. The Muskies added two more in the fifth, with Carlie Morrow (Fr.-Menasha, Wis.) driving in a run after being hit by a pitch and Johnson scoring soon after on a passed ball.

Lakeland then came back from an early deficit against Defiance on the strength of a big fourth inning. The Muskies scored six times, erasing a 2-0 deficit and never trailing again after sending 10 to the plate in the inning.

Johnson started the inning with a single and scored later after Paige Kislow (Fr.-Weston, Wis.) reached on an error. Morrow also hit a sacrifice fly, Hannah Nelson (Jr.-Loves Park, Ill.) singled to score Kislow with the go-ahead run, and Juliana Hall delivered the big hit with a two-run double to score Harlow and Nelson for a 5-2 lead.

Hall added an RBI groundout in the sixth and Johnson doubled in the seventh and scored on a single by Abby Heitman (Fr.-St. Francis, Wis.). The Muskies finished with 12 hits in all in the second game, including three each from Johnson and Nelson and two more each for Harlow and Heitman.

Johnson finished with five hits in all on the day. She also pitched 4 1/3 innings against the Yellow Jackets and allowed four hits and two runs with two strikeouts to get the win in relief of starter Jenna Winge (Fr.-Homer Glen, Ill.), who also allowed four hits and two runs in her first collegiate start.

Josilyn Guzman led Defiance with two hits and three runs batted in, including a two-run home run in the seventh. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 0-8 overall after losing twice on the first day of their stay in Florida.

The Muskies are on the field again Tuesday, this time returning to the DiamondPlex in Winter Haven to first take on Beloit College at 1 p.m. Central (2 p.m. Eastern) and then to face Lake Forest (Ill.) College at 3:30 p.m. Central, 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
