Lakeland tops Beloit to run win streak to five before falling to Lake Forest

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Another dominant performance by Skylar Hall (Jr.-Negaunee, Mich.) propelled the Lakeland University softball team to another win before the Muskies suffered their first loss on their spring break trip as part of a split of two games Tuesday at The Spring Games in central Florida.

Lakeland defeated Beloit College 6-1 in its first game of the day for its fifth straight win in Florida before falling to Lake Forest (Ill.) College 8-0 in its second game. The split with the pair of Midwest Conference schools put the Muskies at 5-3 overall on the season and 5-1 through six of 10 games in the Sunshine State this week.

Hall had her third straight outstanding outing in the circle for Lakeland, throwing a complete game two-hitter and allowing only an unearned run in the first inning while striking out eight. The junior is now 3-0 in Florida allowing five hits with 23 strikeouts over 21 innings, and in four games this season she holds a 1.04 earned run average with four complete games and 29 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Hall pitched for behind for a bit after the Buccaneers (0-5 overall) took advantage of a Muskies error to score a run in the first, but Lakeland warmed up and scored at least one run in each of innings 3 through 6, including two to take the lead in the third when Juliana Hall (Sr.-Portage, Ind.) reached on an error with two outs, scoring Hannah Volom (So.-Portage, Ind.) and Sydney Meyer (Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.).

Volom would add her second hit of the day with an infield single to shortstop to score Abby Heitman (Fr.-St. Francis, Wis.) to make it 3-1 in the fourth. Jordan August (So.-Schererville, Ind.) singled in the fifth to bring in Peyton Harlow (Fr.-La Porte, Ind.), and the Muskies added insurance in the sixth with a two-run single by Juliana Hall scoring Meyer and Hannah Nelson (Jr.-Loves Park, Ill.).

Lakeland's five-game winning streak would be put in danger almost from the start in the second game, as Lake Forest led off the contest with five consecutive singles on the way to scoring four times in the top of the first. The Muskies would steady from there as starting pitcher Nelson retired 11 of the next 12 batters through the fifth inning, but could not break through against Foresters starter Hannah Smith.

Lakeland finished with just two hits despite hitting the ball hard a number of times over the first five innings, lining out four times. The Muskies also saw an opportunity evaporate in the second when a batting order mixup negated a single that would've loaded the bases with one out and resulted instead in the second out of the inning, allowing Smith to escape while stranding two.

The Foresters added on late, scoring four runs over the final three innings to blow it open. Lake Forest (4-3 overall) finished with 15 hits, nine coming in the final three at bats. August and Madi Johnson (Jr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) registered the two hits for Lakeland.

The Muskies have the day off Wednesday before returning to Jan Phyl Village and the Auburndale Softball Complex for two games Thursday. Lakeland will take on Oswego State (N.Y.) University at 9 a.m. Eastern time/8 a.m. Central before facing Ohio Northern University at 11:30 a.m. Eastern, 10:30 a.m. Central.
