Muskies come back in second game to earn baseball split with Stars

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Anthony Yust (Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) earned his first collegiate win as the Lakeland University baseball team rallied to earn a doubleheader split with Dominican University Wednesday night at Wintrust Field.

The Muskies bounced back from an 8-0 loss in the first game to defeat the Stars 7-5 in the second game of the teams' quickly rescheduled Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill, which began in daylight at 3 p.m. and went well into the evening. The games were played Wednesday after being postponed both Sunday and Tuesday earlier in the week.

Yust threw a season-best 7 1/3 innings in the nightcap, scattering nine hits and allowing five runs but just one earned run with two strikeouts. He departed with a 7-3 lead and Andrew Krause (Fr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) later came on and recorded the final five outs, giving up just a walk in 1 2/3 innings for his first save.

The Muskies (5-18 overall, 3-9 NACC) at the plate recorded 12 hits in the second game and also took advantage of five Dominican (14-12 overall, 7-5 NACC) errors.

Lakeland took the lead for good in the fourth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie with three runs. Brian Biggs (Sr.-Romeoville, Ill.) drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt for the second time in the game, and also reached on an error on a play where both Zak Keegan (So.-Frankfort, Ill.) and Austin Palmer (So.-Oro Valley, Ariz.) scored. Biggs would then come home to score on a double steal with Lane Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.)  that made it 5-2.

The Muskies would add on two insurance runs in the top of the eighth when OakLee Spens (Jr.-Burbank, Calif.) hit a two-out single off shortstop John Tormey's glove to score Sobieski and Chris Day (Fr.-Victorville, Calif.). The runs would come in big when Dominican scored three times in the bottom of the inning before Krause came on to shut the door.

Sobieski went 3-for-5 in the second game and Day and Spens both added two hits each. Eight players in all recorded at least one hit in the second game in which the Muskies were much more productive than the opener, when three Stars pitchers combined to scatter seven hits in a shutout win.

Dominican built a 7-0 lead early in the first game, scoring a run in the first, three in the second, another in the third and two more in the fourth. Grayson Downing and Garrett Wano combined for five RBIs in the No. 3 and 4 spots in the order, respectively, as well as five hits between them.

Palmer and Landen Sobieski (So.-Berlin, Wis.) both had two hits in the opener, while Cole Dixon (So.-Newark, Calif.) took the loss in the start, allowing seven hits and seven runs in four innings, but just two runs earned as the Muskies committed four errors.

Lakeland is back home Saturday to host Marian University for a doubleheader starting at noon on campus.
