LaMack delivers late to power Lakeland to nightcap win over Marian

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Tyler LaMack (Sr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) homered to tie the game in the seventh inning and hit a two-run double and inning later to give the Lakeland University baseball team the lead on the way to capturing a 10-7 win over Marian University in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies bounced back from a deficit late in the second game and rebounded after losing the first game 5-4 on a cold, 42-degree spring day where occasional light sleet fell. Lakeland halved a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader for the second time this week, after also splitting a pair with Dominican University Wednesday.

The Muskies (6-19 overall, 4-10 NACC) had just seen a 6-3 lead evaporate in the top of the seventh when the Sabres scored four times, including a game-tying three-run home run by James Bornick, when LaMack led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to right field off Marian reliever Dylan Davis, landing beyond the fence and just below the scoreboard to tie the score at 7-7.

The senior first baseman then delivered again in the eighth inning, after Kyle Gould (So.-Crete, Ill.) walked and OakLee Spens (Jr.-Burbank, Calif.) later singled with two outs. Facing Davis again, LaMack smoked a liner just inside first base and down the right field line all the way to the corner. Gould and Spens both scored easily and LaMack stopped at second with a double, his third hit of the game.

Lane Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) followed with a double to left center to score LaMack, and Armaan Sharma (Fr.-Pinole, Calif.) closed it out with his second inning in relief to get the win, finishing the game in style when with one down and a runner at first Jonah Landowski hit a sharp grounder to LaMack playing near the bag, and he stepped on first and threw down to Spens, who placed the tag on Robbie Knorr for the game-ending double play.

LaMack finished 3-for-3 in the second game with four RBIs and two runs scored. Chris Day (Fr.-Victorville, Calif.) also went 2-for-4 with three runs driven in, including a solo home run in the fourth to give the Muskies a 4-3 lead.

Sharma earned his first collegiate win with two hitless innings of relief, finishing strong after Brody Fay (So.-Surprise, Ariz.) threw the first 6 1/3 innings. Fay and Marian starter Logan Lange both labored early, combining for 13 walks against a tight strike zone, but Fay settled down and allowed just two hits through six innings. He ran into some trouble in the seventh with runners at first and second with one out that turned into big trouble, with Bornick's three-run blast to right tying the game and ending Fay's day.

Lakeland earned the split after a late rally came up short in the opener. Marian (13-12 overall, 6-6 NACC) scored twice in the sixth to take the lead, with Brady Zackrison and Gus Walker both hitting RBI singles with two outs, and the Sabres added a run in the top of the eighth with another two-out hit by Zackrison, a run-scoring double to center.

The Muskies cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth without a hit, with a walk and two hit batters loading the bases with two outs, and Sabres pitcher Isaiah Grimm's wildness continued with a wild pitch allowing Griffin Robinson (So.-Pike Road, Ala.) to score. Michael Martinez came on to finish the eighth and pitched the ninth, but Lakeland threatened with Spens walking to lead off, Landen Sobieski (So.-Berlin, Wis.) hitting a double to put runners at second and third with one out and Zak Keegan (So.-Frankfort, Ill.) hitting a single to score Spens. Martinez would induce a soft lineout and then got a called strike three to end the game and earn the save in relief of Taylor Middaugh, who pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and two runs with two strikeouts and four walks.

Andrew Krause (Fr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) matched Middaugh for the first five innings before exiting in the sixth. Krause finished allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) with five strikeouts. Keegan and both Lane and Landen Sobieski both had two hits in the first game, but Lakeland was plaqued by missed opportunities, stranding 13 runners to the Sabres' five.

The Muskies are back in action Sunday when they travel to take on Rockford University for a doubleheader starting at noon. The games will be played at the Regents' home field for this season at Pohlman Field in Beloit, Wis.
