Regents’ big innings the difference in Muskies road doubleheader losses

BELOIT, Wis. – A pair of big innings for Rockford University were the difference as the Lakeland University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

The Regents prevailed by scores of 5-3 and 10-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill played at Harry C. Pohlman Field. The Muskies finished 1-3 on the weekend and are 6-21 overall and 4-12 in the NACC, while Rockford moved to 13-17 overall and 8-8 in the NACC.

The Regents did all of their scoring for the day in three innings, including all five of their runs in the first game coming in the third inning. The hosts took a 5-0 lead with everything happening after two were out and culminating with Alex Perez hitting a two-run single and Jared Herzog following immediately after with a three-run homer.

Lakeland came back with three runs in the top of the fourth. Lane Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) led off with a single and scored on a triple by Zak Keegan (So.-Frankfort, Ill.), and Jacob Wollschlager (Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) hit a ground out to score Keegan. Kyle Gould (So.-Crete, Ill.) then hit the Muskies' second triple of the inning, and he scored on a single to right by Chris Day (Fr.-Victorville, Calif.) to cut the Regents' lead to 5-3.

Neither team would score the rest of the way. Lakeland's best chances came in the seventh and ninth innings. OakLee Spens (Jr.-Burbank, Calif.) singled with two outs in the seventh and Tyler LaMack (Sr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) doubled down the right field line to put runners at second and third before an inning-ending ground out, and Day and Spens both reached in the ninth, putting runners again at second and third before Sobieski took a called third strike to end the game.

Alex Mikula (Jr.-Orland Park, Ill.) took the loss in the opener, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing six hits. Spens finished with three hits and Keegan added two hits, but the Muskies stranded 10 runners in the first game.

Lakeland led 3-0 and later 5-2 in the second game, taking the latter lead into the seventh inning when the Regents erupted again. Rockford scored eight times in the seventh, sending 13 batters to the plate and getting eight hits. Jonathan Leon singled to score Perez with the go-ahead run, and Joseph Stagowski singled and doubled in the inning, the latter scoring the final two runs of the frame.

The Muskies took their initial lead with three runs in the second, including Mike Schroer (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) walking with the bases loaded and hitting a two-run double. The Regents scored twice in the third to draw within 3-2, but Lakeland rebounded with two runs in the fourth with Schroer again walking with the bases loaded and Sobieski's sacrifice squeeze bunt scoring Keegan to make it 5-2.

Gould and LaMack both had two hits in the second game, when the Regents outhit the Muskies 16-7. Luke Pecore (Fr.-Bowler, Wis.) started and threw six innings, allowing nine hits and four runs (two earned), while Brian Biggs (Sr.-Romeoville, Ill.) took the loss, allowing two runs in one-third of an inning.

Lakeland is back home for its next games Saturday, when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin for a doubleheader starting at noon.
