Muskies honor seniors but fall twice to Warriors in final home date of season

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University softball team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to take the lead but Wisconsin Lutheran College had the last word, coming back in the final innings for a 10-9 win in the second game to clinch a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon in the Muskies' home finale.

The Warriors also won the first game by a 7-5 count, and with the two wins put a damper on Lakeland's Senior Day and continued its struggles to close the season. The Muskies saw their losing streak grow to nine games and dropped to 13-21 overall and 6-16 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with two games remaining Sunday at Edgewood College.

Lakeland honored seniors Gabby Greetan (Manitowoc, Wis.) and Juliana Hall (Portage, Ind.) between the two games, and the Muskies scored eight runs over two innings to quickly erase WLC's seven-run lead in the second game, including four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

After a sleepy first 10 innings of the doubleheader, the Muskies' bats came alive with four hits in the fourth. Haylee Dodd (Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) hit a run-scoring triple, a single by Peyton Harlow (Fr.-La Porte, Ind.) that turned into more with her getting to third on a two-base error with Carlie Morrow (Fr.-Menasha, Wis.) scoring, and Madi Johnson (Jr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) lining a single to score Harlow to make it 7-4.

Lakeland came right back in the fifth with Paige Kislow (Fr.-Weston, Wis.) reaching on an infield single to lead off, and Morrow hit a two-out, two-run double to straightaway center field to draw the Muskies within 7-6. Harlow then came up with another big hit, a triple to right center to score Morrow, and after a relay throw to third got away she scampered home to suddenly put Lakeland ahead 8-7.

Wisconsin Lutheran (13-25 overall, 6-16 NACC) answered with a run in the sixth, getting a bases-loaded RBI single by Ashley Corley, but the Muskies limited the damage when pitcher Hannah Nelson (Jr.-Loves Park, Ill.) got Makayla Huff to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. The Warriors retook the lead in the seventh, though, with Olivia Krieser hitting a one-out double and Briana Vilches following with a single to drive her in. Taylor Peterson then hit a solo home run to left center to make it 10-8, a run that proved crucial when Lakeland rallied in the bottom of the seventh.

Sydney Meyer (Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) reached with one out on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs. Harlow then came up with another big hit, a double down the left field line to score Meyer and draw Lakeland within a run. Nelson then came up and after a battle hit a high fly to deep left, but Emily Cardenas tracked it down near the warning track to end the game.

The Warriors never trailed in the first game, scoring a run in the top of the first and then breaking a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third. The Muskies answered WLC's first score with a run in the first after Nelson led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Jordan August (So.-Schererville, Ind.). Nelson later added a sacrifice fly in the third to drive in a run and cut Lutheran's lead to 4-2, but the guests scored three more times over the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead.

Lakeland mounted a rally in the sixth, scoring three times after loading the bases with no outs. Dodd and Meyer both hit groundouts to score runs, and Morrow reached on an infield single to score Hall, the Muskies' all-conference third baseman who played for the first time since a knee injury March 14 in Florida. The hosts could get no closer, though, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

Nelson and Hall both finished with two hits in the first game. Morrow also added two hits on the doubleheader including one hit in each game.

Lakeland wraps up its season tomorrow against Edgewood at Ceniti Park in Verona, with the first game starting at noon.
