Series: 16th meeting, Lakeland leads 14-1
Lakeland and Rockford meet for the 16th straight season in a series that has been dominated by the Muskies save for one meeting at Taylor Field five years ago. Lakeland has won the last four meetings, including a 70-21 victory in last year's season finale at home at Taylor Field as Lane Sobieski closed out his career with seven touchdown passes to tie the school single-game touchdown pass mark. The Muskies also won the three meetings before that, all at Rockford, including most recently a 56-28 victory Nov. 13, 2021 in the season finale. The Regents' lone win in the series came Oct. 13, 2018, a 37-20 victory on the road at Lakeland. The Muskies are 7-1 at home and 7-0 on the road in the series that started in 2008, the first season of football in the NACC.

Lakeland last time out: Lost to Concordia Wisconsin 31-28 last week
The Muskies lost the 32nd annual Cheese Bowl game, letting one slip away after dominating offensively most of the day. Lakeland outgained Concordia 563-265 behind Robby Michael's 463 yards passing, a career high and the fifth-most in a game in school history. The Muskies failed to cash in too many times on drives deep into Falcon territory, though, getting inside Concordia's 30-yard line on five occasions without getting a point. That included their final two drives of the game, the last ending at the CUW 6 inside the final minute. The Falcons took the lead for good on a 30-yard touchdown pass wtih 6:55 left in the game and won the Cheese Bowl game for the second straight year.

Rockford last time out: Lost at Eureka 34-27 last week
The Regents rallied from a 21-0 deficit late in the first half to take the lead, but then saw the Red Devils score twice in the final 5:30, including the winning touchdown with just 41 seconds left in both teams' NACC opener. Rockford drove 72 yards in just 1:14  to score with 12 seconds left in the first half, and then tied the game early in the fourth quarter and took the lead soon after when Napoleon Williams returned a blocked field goal 93 yards for a touchdown and a 28-21 lead. Eureka came back to win in a game that included 1,054 yards of total offense, including 569 from the Regents. Jaelan Ray threw for 470 yards and Da'Quan McIntosh (155 yards) and Maurice Williams (110) both went over 100 yards receiving in the loss.

About the Regents: Rockford enters with a 1-2 record on the season and has been involved in three close games. The Regents opened with a 34-27 loss to Beloit but then edged St. Scholastica (Minn.) 38-37 in their second non-conference game before falling to Eureka last week. Rockford finished 1-9 overall last year and 0-8 in the NACC in the first year under head coach Calvin Toliver, previously the Regents' offensive coordinator for two years before becoming head coach. Rockford is led by senior quarterback Ray, who holds school records in almost every individual single-game, season and career passing category, including throwing for over 8,000 yards and 66 touchdowns in his career.

Robby's big day: Saturday's game features a pair of quarterbacks who each threw for nearly 500 yards last week, including Lakeland's sophomore Michael, who set a career high for the second straight game and threw for one of the biggest passing totals in school history, just 45 yards from Mark Novara's school record of 508 yards set Sept. 28, 1996 against Franklin (Ind.). Michael's 38 completions also tied Novara for the second-most in a game in school history, and he also rushed for 83 yards to finish with 546 yards of total offense. That number came up just 30 yards short of the school record of 546 set by Michael Whitley Nov. 5, 2016 against Aurora.

Michael now has 908 yards passing through three games, a number ranking 14th in NCAA Division III through three games. He already has nearly reached his total of 999 yards last season in the seven games he played in, and with five touchdown passes he has already surpassed his four TD throws from all of last year, when he was named NACC Freshman of the Year.

Rare occurrence: Michael spread the ball around on Saturday to seven different receivers, and all of them had at least 41 yards receiving in the game. Five finished with at least 60 yards receiving: Kolby Cohen (seven catches, 128 yards), Jatron Bevly (six receptions, 65 yards), Xaviar Thomas (four catches, 63 yards), Keon Willis (four catches, 62 yards) and Caleb Besaw (eight receptions, 61 yards). It was the first time Lakeland finished with five receivers with at least 60 yards receiving in a game since Sept. 30, 2001, also against Concordia Wisconsin, and also coming in a narrow Cheese Bowl loss (17-14). Posting at least 60 yards receiving that day were Jeff Taff (120 yards), Jason Inghram (94 yards), James Hayes (73 yards), David Wolff (71 yards) and Scott Huber (62 yards).

First interception: The week before it was senior linebacker Charles Kobe getting his first interception. Last week it was fellow senior Karlis Ozols with his first career pick, and he took it to the house for a 21-yard touchdown, his second career score. Ozols also recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown against Eureka Oct. 30, 2021, one of three punts blocked that day by Kobe. The interception being a first actually comes with an asterisk for Ozols, as he also intercepted a pass last year against Wisconsin Lutheran. The pick came on a point-after-touchdown attempt, and thus does not count as an official interception in records.
