Series: 2nd meeting, Buena Vista leads 1-0
Lakeland and Buena Vista meet for just the second time after their first meeting a year ago this weekend. It's a game that won't be soon forgotten after the Beavers came back for a 41-34 win, scoring the game's final 31 points in just over a quarter to rally from a 34-10 deficit. The teams combined for 1,073 yards of offense, including 563 for Lakeland, and the contest featured a record performance by the Muskies'
Jatron Bevly. In just his second collegiate game, Bevly rushed for a school-record 343 yards and five touchdowns on just 17 carries, with his 20.2 yards per carry also setitng a new NCAA Division III single-game record. Bevly scored on runs of 36, 54, 75, 47 and 70 yards, but left the game after his last score and BVU came back led by Zach Herrera throwing for 363 yards and four touchdowns.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to UW-Platteville 80-13 Aug. 31
The Muskies' opener went downhill quickly, as the Pioneers exploded for 35 points in the first quarter and 56 in the first half on the way to the victory. Lakeland scored both of its touchdowns in the third quarter as
Robby Michael scored on scampers of 14 and 13 yards, but the Muskies were held to 237 yards of offense while Platteville gained 571 yards and 30 first downs and scored on all 10 of its trips to the red zone, including nine touchdowns. Michael provided much of the offense passing for 146 yards and rushing for 87, while
Xaviar Thomas caught two passes for 87 yards.
Markese Collins recorded his first collegiate interception on defense and
Karlis Ozols added a strip sack and fumble recovered by freshman
Kenyon Peoples.
Buena Vista last time out: Lost at Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 51-7 last week
The Beavers' season debut unrolled in a similar fashion as Lakeland's, as Gustavus Adolphus dominated all the way in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties built leads of 13-0 after one quarter, 27-0 at halftime and 48-0 after three quarters, and outgained BVU 583-129 for the game. The Beavers scored their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run by Keaton Huebner but gained just 2.6 yards per play for the game, including going 0-for-10 on third down. Eman Alaniz led Buena Vista in rushing and receiving with 37 yards each, while Zach Herrera passed for 57 yards. Dylan Berens, Keaton Bindel and Aydan Guenther all posted sacks for the BVU defense.
About the Beavers: It's a new start for Buena Vista this year after the Beavers finished 4-6 a year ago and 3-5 to place sixth of nine teams in the American Rivers Conference (formerly the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Austin Dickinson is in his first year as head coach after most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at UW-Eau Claire. He's a 2010 graduate of BVU, previously spent five years as an assistant at the school and has an almost all-new coaching staff. Ten starters returned from last year's team, which finished 0-5 at home but posted a 4-1 record in road games.
Over 1,000, near 1,000: Lakeland quarterback
Robby Michael reached one milestone last week and is on the doorstep of reaching another this week. Michael entered the opener with 999 yards passing in his Muskies career, and with his 146 yards last week went over the 1,000-yard mark throwing. The sophomore also enters this week with 982 yards rushing in his short collegiate career, putting him 18 yards from reaching 1,000 yards rushing and receiving at Lakeland.
Doubling his numbers and more: Senior wide receiver
Xaviar Thomas caught two long passes last week for 87 yards, the two longest catches of his Lakeland career including a career-best reception of 52 yards. His receiving yardage total bettered his production from his first three years with the Muskies, when he has played as a reserve wideout. Thomas entered the season with seven career catches for 74 yards, including five receptions for 56 yards plus his first collegiate touchdown last season in the season finale against Rockford. Last week's game brought his career numbers to nine catches for 161 yards.
On the rebound: Lakeland set a dubious record last week, with the 80 points allowed the most in a game in school history. The 67-point margin was one less than the biggest margin of defeat for the Muskies, 68 points set last year against Aurora. One silver lining is that a good number of players on this year's team have already shown they can respond well after such a game. One week after losing to Aurora last year, Lakeland put up 70 points in defeating Rockford 70-21 in its season finale.
