AUBURNDALE, Fla. –
OakLee Spens (
Sr.-South Weber, Utah) doubled to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Lakeland University baseball team earned an 8-7 extra-innings win over Curry (Mass.) College to complete a doubleheader sweep Monday on the third day of its spring break trip.
The Muskies defeated the Colonels in eight innings in the second game of the twinbill after also posting an 8-3 win in the teams' first game of the scheduled seven-inning doubleheader earlier in the morning. Lakeland has now won three straight games and is 3-3 overall on the season and through six games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Muskies rallied from a pair of three-run deficits in the second game, keeping the pressure on Curry (3-3 overall) by scoring in six of the eight innings. Spens drove in four of the runs, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double.
The senior followed a leadoff triple by
Nathan Walter (
Fr.-Watertown, Wis.) in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to draw Lakeland within 7-5. Spens then drove in the tying run in the sixth with a single to score
Zak Keegan (
Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) and tie the game at 7-7.
Both teams advanced a runner to second but no further in the seventh inning, but the Muskies put together a quick rally in the eighth. Keegan led off with a double and after a fly out Spens came up with a double to left center to score Keegan and give Lakeland an 8-7 lead.
Curry mounted a rally of its own in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with one out, but pinch runner Nick Krise was picked off and retired in a rundown between third base and home plate for the second out of the inning.
Armaan Sharma (
So.-Pinole, Calif.) then got Kyle Doolin to ground out to second to end the game, giving him the win after throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out one.
The Muskies also scored eight runs in the first game, getting an early jump with two runs in both the first and second innings and then pulling away after the Colonels closed within a run in the fifth inning.
Spens and
Quinn Bradford (
Fr.-Wayne, Ill.) both drove in a run in the first inning, including Bradford delivering the first of his three hits in the game. Spens also sent home a run with a single in the second to make it 4-0, but Curry came back with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames to get within 4-3.
Lakeland opened it back up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two hits, an error and a hit batter. Bradford singled with one out and later scored on an error,
Dane Nickolai (
Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) stole home on the back end of a double steal to make it 6-3, and Keegan later hit a single with two outs to score
Kellen Hodges (
