Lakeland closes outstanding spring trip with two more wins, finishes 9-1 in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – A pair of stout pitching performances allowed the Lakeland University softball team to close out its most successful spring break trip in program history as the Muskies won two more games on the final day of the Clermont Spring Games.

Lakeland opened Saturday with a 5-1 victory over fellow Wisconsin school Lawrence University and then edged Trinity (Conn.) College 2-1 in its second game at Legends Way softball complex. The Muskies improved to 9-3 overall this season and finished 9-1 on their trip to Florida, the program's best-ever record on a spring break trip.

Lakeland received strong pitching throughout the week, allowing just 26 runs over 10 games, and it continued Saturday. Madi Johnson (Sr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Skylar Hall (Sr.-Negaunee, Mich.) both threw complete game three-hitters, with Johnson striking out six and Hall fanning two and allowing no earned runs.

The Muskies started the day fast against their opponents from Appleton, scoring three times in the bottom of the first against Lawrence. Johnson reached on a one-out bunt single and scored on a single by Maddie Raske (Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.). Carlie Morrow (So.-Menasha, Wis.) followed with a double to score Raske, and Morrow scored after Peyton Harlow (So.-La Porte, Ind.) reached on an error.

The Vikings scored a run in the fourth, but Lakeland responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Raske struck again with an RBI single to score Johnson in the fifth, and Johnson scored her third run of the game in the sixth, reaching on a single with two outs and later scoring on a wild pitch.

The final game against Trinity was a pitchers' duel, with both teams scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. Trinity's Gianna Tito reached on an error with one out and later scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Bantams a 1-0 lead.

The Muskies came back in the fifth to tie and then take the lead. Juliana Hall (Sr.-Portage, Ind.) led off with an infield single, and pinch runner Reyna Rupnow (Fr.-Ixonia, Wis.) moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sydney Meyer (So.-Crown Point, Ind.). Hannah Nelson (Sr.-Loves Park, Ill.) then singled to score Rupnow to tie the game, and Johnson followed with another big moment with a triple to score Nelson with the lead run.

Hall earned her fourth win of the trip, allowing just four base runners in the game. Nelson finished 3-for-4 and Johnson added two hits, finishing the trip batting .500 with 16 hits in 32 at bats.

Lakeland's 9-1 record on its trip was two games better than its previous best on a spring trip. The Muskies finished 7-3 in Florida last year and also in 2014.

Lakeland now gets ready to open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play next Saturday when it travels to face Aurora University at noon in Montgomery, Ill.
