Hall and Hall help Lakeland stay hot with twinbill sweep of Benedictine

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Skylar Hall (Sr.-Negaunee, Mich.) pitched a shutout in the first game and Juliana Hall (Sr.-Portage, Ind.) finished a huge three days with six hits as the Lakeland University softball team swept Benedictine University Saturday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Muskies won the opener 4-0 and then rolled to a 14-6 win in five innings in the second game. Lakeland swept a doubleheader for the second straight day and stretched its winning streak to five games, improving to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the NACC.

Skylar Hall picked up two wins on the day, starting and completing both games, in all throwing 12 innings and improving her record to 7-2 this season. The senior was dominant in the first game, hurling a complete game four-hitter, striking out three and walking just one in posting her second shutout of the season and fifth in her career.

Juliana Hall completed a nearly flawless three-day stretch of hitting by going 6-for-7 at the plate on Saturday, driving in five runs and scoring three times. 'Junior' went 4-for-4 in the second game with three RBIs and three runs scored, and snapped out of some early season hitting struggles in a big way.

In Lakeland's six games over three days, Hall hit a magnificent .714 with 15 hits in 21 at bats. She drove in 10 runs and scored seven times as the Muskies went 5-1 in a Thursday-Friday-Saturday stretch of conference games over Easter weekend, and in three days raised her batting average more than 200 points, from .143 after a tough spring break trip in Florida up to .357 after Saturday's games.

Juliana Hall was 2-for-3 in the first game, including driving in the game's first run in the second inning to give Lakeland the lead. Jordan August (Jr.-Schererville, Ind.) also singled to drive in a run and Carlie Morrow (So.-Menasha, Wis.) capped the three-run inning with a triple to the left field corner to drive in a run and give the Muskies a 3-0 lead.

Lakeland then recovered from an early 1-0 deficit in the second game after Benedictine (8-6 overall, 1-3 NACC) scored an unearned run in the first inning, breaking out for 13 runs over the second, third and fourth innings.

Juliana Hall singled through the left side in the second to send Abby Heitman (So.-St. Francis, Wis.) home after a leadoff triple and tie the game, and the Muskies took the lead shortly after Kendyll Holub (Sturtevant, Wis.) came on as a pinch runner for Hall. Holub got back to first after an attempted pickoff throw at first base, and when the ball got away the freshman began a mad dash around the bases that would result in three Benedictine errors in all and a run scored to give Lakeland a 2-1 lead.

The Muskies then exploded for six runs in the third, belting out seven hits in the inning. Heitman hit a two-run double, Juliana Hall ripped a two-run triple and Peyton Harlow (So.-La Porte, Ind.) and Sydney Meyer (So.-Crown Point, Ind.) also added RBI singles. Lakeland then added five more runs on just three hits in the fourth, taking advantage of three more Eagles errors to build a 13-2 lead.

Benedictine finally got to Skylar Hall in the top of the fifth, scoring four times to briefly extend the game, but the Muskies closed it out in the bottom of the inning. A dropped fly ball to lead off the inning eventually led to August reaching on an infield single with Harlow coming around from second base to score the run to end the game on account of the eight-run rule after five innings.

Heitman, Harlow, Hannah Nelson (Sr.-Loves Park, Ill.) and Madi Johnson (Sr.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) all had two hits each in the second game, with Heitman driving in three runs and Harlow and August adding two RBIs each. Heitman also added three runs scored.

After a busy three days, Lakeland now is off until next Saturday when it travels to take on Alverno College for a doubleheader in Milwaukee starting at noon.
