Series history: 15th meeting, series tied 7-7
The Muskies and Illinois Institute of Technology pair up for the first of two meetings this season after playing just once each of the last two years. Illinois Tech defeated Lakeland 84-66 in the teams' last meeting back on Feb. 15 of this year in Chicago. The Muskies won the last meeting between the teams at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium, taking an 81-75 victory in overtime Jan. 31, 2024 as
Jaxson Dillon scored the tying bucket with 49 seconds left in regulation and Lakeland never trailed in thee overtime period. IIT has won six of 10 meetings between the teams since it joined the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference for the 2018-19 season. The series dates back to Feb. 9, 1973, when Lakeland won the first meeting 93-67 at the old Armory in downtown Sheboygan.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at St. Norbert 96-71 Nov. 24
The Muskies have been idle from play since last Monday when they fell to the Green Knights on the road in their NACC opener. St. Norbert came out red hot, shooting 68.8% in the first half in taking a 59-40 halftime lead, and the hosts shot above 60% for almost the entire game before finishing at 57.6%. SNC also dominated play inside, outscoring Lakeland 64-20 in the paint.
Jaxson Dillon and
Asanjai Hunter both scored 17 points each for the Muskies, who shot 35.8% from the field but did hit 13 three-pointers and also made all 10 of their free throw attempts.
Even with a slightly subpar scoring game for him compared to his first four games, Hunter still comes into this contest averaging 23.0 points per game through five games. His average is good for a tie for second in the NACC in scoring, behind only Mason Dopirak of MSOE (28.0 ppg), and Hunter also is tied for 24th in NCAA Division III in scoring.
Illinois Tech last time out: Lost to Lake Forest (Ill.) 87-74 Nov. 19
The Scarlet Hawks have had an even longer break than Lakeland, idle for a full two weeks since theri last game when they fell to the Foresters at home in Chicago. Illinois Tech fell behind 46-29 at halftime and couldn't catch up in the second half despite Garrison Carter scoring 22 points. Nicolas Ortiz also scored 13 and Nick Galati added 10 for IIT, which shot 45% but hit just 5 of 27 from three-point range and was outrebounded 37-28.
The Scarlet Hawks finished 4-21 overall last year and in the basement in the NACC with a 3-15 conference record. Illinois Tech retuned just one starter-Carter-from last year's team, and Tech has struggled the last couple years after qualifying for the NACC Tournament as recently as 2023.
