PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Chris Day (
Jr.-Victorville, Calif.) drove in three runs and
Mason Holz (
Fr.-Waupun, Wis.) threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win as the Lakeland University baseball team topped Marian University 8-4 to split a doubleheader Tuesday on the Muskies' Senior Day.
Lakeland rebounded from a 10-6 loss in the first game to earn its first win since April 5 and snap a 14-game losing streak. The Muskies won their home finale for the season, earning their fifth doubleheader split in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play and second split with a team that has qualified for the NACC Tournament.
Holz notched his second straight strong start at home, finishing with 11 2/3 scoreless innings over his last two appearances on Lakeland's home field. Against Marian the lefthander allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out five and walking three to earn his second win of the season.
Holz also pitched with a cushion much of the way after the Muskies scored five times in the second to take the lead.
Caleb Sumsion (
Jr.-Dayton, Nev.) executed a bases-loaded squeeze bunt to drive in the first run, Day followed with a two-run single and
Zak Keegan (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) also added an RBI single as Lakeland sent ten to the plate in the inning.
Sean Gregorius (
Fr.-Germantown, Wis.) also singled in the fourth to drive in Day after a leadoff walk, and Day singled in the fifth to drive in
Dylan Costello (
Jr.-New Berlin, Wis.) and make it 7-0. The Muskies cruised from there, with
Eli Watkins (
So.-Herrin, Ill.) going the final 3 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.
Keegan and
Landen Sobieski (
Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) both added two hits each in the second game, and two as well as fellow senior
OakLee Spens (
Sr.-South Weber, Utah) all were honored between games as the three seniors on this year's team. The ceremony came after a first game when Lakeland was in position to take the Sabres (18-19 overall, 12-10 NACC) to the wire until a five-run sixth inning that included four Marian runs coming after two were out.
The Muskies came back from a 3-0 deficit after half an inning, scoring twice in the bottom of the first without a hit and adding two more in the second to tie at 4-4 after a two-run triple by Gregorius.
Bryce Backus (
Fr.-Kenosha, Wis.) settled in after a rocky first two innings to retire seven straight at one point, but he left with an injury with two outs in the fifth.
Rily Roberts (
Fr.-Chattanooga, Tenn.) came on to get the third out in the fifth but ran into trouble in the sixth after a pair of early walks. James Bornick and Lucas Lemons both singled to right to drive in runs, and Marc Jones hit a two-run double to left to push the Marian lead to 10-4.
Lakeland put together a brief rally in the ninth as Keegan walked,
Tucker Gegenfurtner (
So.-Onalaska, Wis.) doubled and Gregorius singled up the middle to drive in Keegan. Sobieski walked to load the bases and Costello hit a sacrifice fly, but the Muskies would get no closer.
Gegenfurtner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and walked twice in reaching all five times up. Gregorius added two hits and drove in three and Costello also added two RBIs. Backus went 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) while
Anthony Yust (
Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) finished up with 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
Lakeland closes out its season Friday with two games against Milwaukee School of Engineering, with the doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in Glendale.
