Box Score 2 PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Kendyll Holub (
So.-Sturtevant, Wis.) posted five hits as part of a hot streak at the plate and the Lakeland University softball team rolled past Mount Mary University in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon.
The Muskies won by scores of 15-2 and 11-3, closing out the Blue Angels early in both non-conference games under the eight-run rule after five innings. The teams just beat wet weather moving into the area Wednesday evening and Lakeland improved to 9-9 overall and has won six of its last seven games after a 3-8 start to the season.
Holub reached base with hits in her first five at bats of the day, including two doubles and a single in the first game and a double and a single in the second game. The latter marked the sophomore outfielder's eight consecutive hits in eight at bats going back to the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Alverno College, and her streak of eight straight hits finally ended with a fly out in the fourth inning of Wednesday's second game.
Maddie Raske (
So.-Tinley Park, Ill.) also added four hits on the day including three doubles. Two of her doubles came in the second inning of the opening game, with her first leading off the inning and the second driving in two runs to cap a seven-run rally to take an 8-1 lead.
The Muskies then blew wide open the first game with another seven-run inning in the fourth.
Sydney Meyer (
Jr.-Crown Point, Ind.) doubled to drive in a run,
Brianna Gaedtke (
Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) hit a two-run single and Holub doubled to drive in
Avery Meister (
So.-Novi, Mich.). The inning continued with Lakeland loading the bases and
Aubrey Kueper (
Fr.-Jackson, Wis.) cleared them with a three-run double down the right field line for her first collegiate hit and runs batted in.
Ten different players contributed to Lakeland's 13-hit attack in the first game, which also included 12 different players scoring a run.
Jacie Jones (
Jr.-Prairie du Sac, Wis.) earned the win in the circle, throwing four innings and allowing four hits while striking out six before
Maddie Klauer (
So.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) pitched the final inning, allowing two hits and one unearned run.
The Muskies stayed hot at the plate in the second game, scoring in all five innings and recovering from a big Mount Mary blast in the fourth inning to still close the game out early.
Jones went 3-for-3 hitting in the second game with a pair of RBIs and
Carlie Morrow (
Jr.-Menasha, Wis.) added two hits including a two-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning. Morrow hit a fly over the head of Mount Mary right fielder Lily Day and never slowed down rounding the bases, easily beating the throw home to the plate for her first home run of the season.
Gaedtke also added a two-run single in the third inning to push Lakeland's lead to 7-0, though the Blue Angels (3-18 overall) briefly cut into the Muskies' margin in the top of the fourth. Lillian Fay and Alex Eads both singled to start the inning and Kylie Ann Kluck hit a three-run homer over the fence in left center to make it 7-3, but Lakeland came right back with three in the bottom of the fourth, including RBI doubles by Raske and Jones. The Muskies then finished the game off in the bottom of the fifth, with
Kaylee Hunt (
Fr.-St. Paul Park, Minn.) and
Grace Portenier (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) reaching on bunt singles and then
Jordan August (
Sr.-Schererville, Ind.) and
Lexi Howard (
Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) both receiving walks, the latter with the bases loaded driving in the clinching run.
Melanie Watters (
Sr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and
Jenna Winge (
Jr.-Homer Glen, Ill.) combined on the pitching effort, with Watters earning her first collegiate win going four innings and allowing eight hits and three runs with three strikeouts. Winge cleaned up with a scoreless fifth inning, allowing a hit and striking out two.
Lakeland is back to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Saturday when it travels to take on Rockford University for two games starting at noon in Rockford, Ill.
