Series:Â 21st meeting, Lakeland leads 13-7
Lakeland and Greenville are meeting for the first time in 18 years, when the Muskies won 36-21 on the road in Greenville, Ill., on Sept. 22, 2007 as Brad Wilk passed for 254 yards and four touchdowns and Benjamin Lombardi ran for 105 yards. That game marked the final meeting between the two schools as members of the Illini-Badger Football Conference, which ended operations after the 2007 season when the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference began sponsoring football. It also was the final meeting between the teams after playing for 20 straight years from 1988-2007, a series that started Nov. 12, 1988 with the Panthers defeating the Muskies 16-6. The teams last met in Plymouth Sept. 23, 2006, with Lakeland prevailing 28-13, and the Muskies have won seven straight in the series since Greenville's last win, a 38-32 win at Lakeland Oct. 21, 2000.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Carthage 51-40 last Saturday
The Muskies started strong and led at halftime but the Firebirds took over in the second half and won behind a strong running game. Carthage scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter and rolled up 305 rushing yards for the game in coming back after trailing 26-23 at halftime. Lakeland built a 20-7 lead in the game's first 11 minutes, with
Robby Michael and
Jatron Bevly scoring on short runs and Michael finding
Deshawn Hampton for a 73-yard touchdown. Michael and Hampton later hooked up for a 47-yard touchdown.
Michael finished completing 27 of 43 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 93 yards and three scores, numbers that would earn him Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Jeremy Kobe also caught eight passes for 98 yards and
Caden Kleparski added six catches for 68 yards plus a pair of two-point conversion catches.
Markese Collins paced the defense with eight tackles plus an interception,
Parker Giese posted a sack and a forced fumble recovered by
Norrye Evans, and
De'Amonte Arroyo also recovered a fumble as the Muskies won the turnover battle 3-0.
Greenville last time out: Lost at Illinois College 28-9 last week Thursday
The Panthers are also coming off a season-opening loss, falling to the Blueboys last Thursday night on the road. Greenville was held to 209 yards of offense and just nine first downs and Illinois College scored single touchdowns in all four quarters. Max Lynch completed 7 of 11 passes for 116 yards and a 60-yard touchdown to Shemari Thomas and Terrel Graves rushed 19 times for 63 yards. Julian O'Malley led the defense with 12 tackles and R.J. King added a quarterback sack for the Panthers, who held the Blueboys to 3.2 yards a rush in 37 rushing attempts (118 yards) but saw IC convert 8 of 14 third downs and all three of its fourth down tries in holding the ball for 38:30.
About the Panthers: Greenville had a solid season a year ago, finishing 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The Panthers only lost to UW-River Falls and Northwestern (Minn.) twice in their season, as UMAC teams play several conference opponents twice with just six teams in the conference. Greenville also was 2-0 against the NACC last year, defeating Concordia Chicago 54-23 and Eureka 27-7. Robbie Schomaker is in his 13th year as head coach at the school located 53 miles east and north of St. Louis, Mo., and he has won 64 games in his career and is a three-time UMAC coach of the year.
Senior Day: Though it is just the second of six home games for Lakeland this season, the Muskies are celebrating Senior Day today. Early season Senior Day festivities have become more prevalent in recent years with programs opting for warmer weather and better health for the team for a Senior Day in September, and today Lakeland will honor 13 senior members of this year's team:
Jatron Bevly,
Caleb Besaw,
Markese Collins,
Parker Giese,
Monroe Hobbs,
Austin Holmes,
Jeremy Kobe,
Robby Michael,
Shamond Oliver,
Vyron Rosquist-Wallace,
Benji Smith,
Evan Soto and
Brekkan Spens. The group will be honored in a ceremony on the field before the game. The 13 seniors includes 10 players who have been a part of the program for four or five years, a third-year player (Spens) on track to graduate this year, a transfer (Kobe) who joined the program last year and a graduate student (Smith) who joined the program this year.
