Clutch hits, strong pitching help Muskies top Albion for second straight win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Jacob Wollschlager (Sr.-Kenosha, Wis.) delivered the go-ahead hit in the sixth inning and the Lakeland University baseball team received excellent pitching from Jacob Riddick (So.-Pickett, Wis.) and Jake Tubbs (Jr.-Antioch, Ill.) in a 4-3 win over Albion (Mich.) College Wednesday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Muskies won their second straight game in Florida after four losses to open their spring break trip. Lakeland also defeated a team with a winning record overall on the season for the second straight game and improved to 4-6 overall.

The Muskies answered Albion's lone scoring inning of the game, a three-run fifth inning, by scoring twice in the top of the sixth to go back ahead. Dylan Costello (Sr.-New Berlin, Wis.) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third after a single by Chris Finn (Jr.-Mapleton, Ill.) and scored on a sacrifice fly by J.T. Cortinas (Jr.-Chino Hills, Calif.) to tie the game at 3-3. Sawyer Laffoon (So.-Sheldon, Ill.) followed by reaching on an infield single, and with runners on the corners and two outs Wollschlager hit a single to left field, scoring Finn to put Lakeland ahead 4-3.

Tubbs came on in the sixth inning and would pitch superbly in relief, shutting down the Britons (5-3 overall) by allowing no hits and striking out three with a pair of walks. He induced Jackson Schaffner into a 5-4-3 double play to end the sixth inning, got out of the seventh after a pair of two-out walks, and then set down the final six Albion batters in order to earn the four-inning save.

The Muskies led for much of the game, taking the lead first with a run in the second and adding another in the third. Laffoon got Lakeland on the board in the second with an RBI single with two outs to score Finn, and Chris Day (Sr.-Victorville, Calif.) cashed in after a leadoff double in the third, scoring from third on a wild pitch.

Day finished 3-for-4 at the plate, Laffoon added two hits plus a walk and Finn scored twice to lead Lakeland at the plate. Riddick and Tubbs combined to allow just six hits, with Riddick earning his first win as a Muskie after allowing three runs over five innings and striking out five.

Jack Renner pitched 5 2/3 innings for Albion, allowing six hits and four runs with three strikeouts. Tyler Murphy came on in relief for the Britons and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out six.

Lakeland finishes its Florida trip with doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday, starting with facing Fitchburg State (Mass.) University on Thursday at 10 a.m. Central time, 11 a.m. locally in Florida. The Muskies will stay on the Lake Myrtle Complex Field No. 8 for their second game of the day, taking on Albertus Magnus (Conn.) College at 1:30 p.m. Central, 2:30 p.m. Eastern.
