APPLETON, Wis. – Lawrence University's Grayson Ogren scored four times and the Lakeland University men's soccer team's season got off to a disappointing start with a 5-1 loss Tuesday night at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings scored three goals in a span of just over five minutes in the middle of the second half to break open a close game and avenge a loss to the Muskies last year. Lakeland defeated Lawrence 4-1 last season with a four-goal explosion in the second half, but this time it was the Vikings heating up late and improving to 4-0-1 in the teams' last five meetings in Appleton going back to 2015.
Ogren scored twice in the first half, including the match's first goal 6 minutes, 49 seconds in with an assist from Alan McIntosh. He added a penalty kick goal late in the first half, giving Lawrence a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The Muskies cut the lead in half in the 53rd minute.
Isai Gil (
Jr.-Beaumont, Calif.) fired a long throw-in to
Dunia Wangu (
Jr.-Tanzania) between three defenders, and Wangu settled the ball and before even fully turning towards the goal fired a shot just inside the left post for the goal.
Ogren would strike again in the 67th minute with an unassisted goal for the hat trick, then added on another less than two minutes later to make it 4-1. Gerald Hernandez-Roman then added the final goal in the 72nd minute for the final margin.
The final result was a product of opportunities taken advantage of, as the teams tied with nine total shots and six shots on goal each. Christian Puebla made three saves in goal for Lawrence, while
Ali Faiad (
Fr.-Tampa, Fla.) made one save in his collegiate debut.
Wangu led Lakeland with three shot attempts.
Justin Cain (
Jr.-Houston, Texas) added two shot attempts.
