Lakeland Women’s Soccer Rolls Over Crusaders 5-0

The Lakeland women's soccer team had to brush off a sluggish start and compact opponent before rolling to an easy 5-0 win over Maranatha Baptist. Senior forward Amanda Smith (Neenah) had a record setting day as she scored four times, tying Lakeland's all-time scoring mark of 88 goals in the process.

Smith now stands even with former Lakeland College stand out Meghan Wudtke (1999-2003) on the all-time list.

Smith opened the scoring in the 30th minute when she slotted home the game's first goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Laura Engel (Appleton). Smith struck again in the 38th minute when she drilled home a rebound off her own shot to take the score to 2-0 heading into halftime.

The second half started much like the first half ended with Smith scoring her third goal of the game. Smith would add one more goal giving her a total of four on the day and 24 goals on the season, when in the 75th minute she converted to give Lakeland a 4-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, junior Ann Lehecka (McHenry, Illinois) headed home a great cross from Engel to give the Muskies a 5-0 victory.

The Muskies out shot the Crusaders decisively, with a 37 to 4 tally. Sophomore goalkeeper Alli Weiss picked up the shutout in goal.

With the win, Lakeland is now 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the Lake Michigan Conference. The 3-0 mark puts the Muskies back atop the standings as they head into the weekend.

The Lakeland women return to action this Saturday, October 16th when they host conference nemesis Concordia University at 1:00 pm. The game is a battle for first place in the conference as 3-0 Lakeland has 6 points (2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie) and 2-0-1 Concordia has 5 points.
