Lakeland Women’s Soccer Falls in LMC Semifinals

The Lakeland College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker 3-1 at the hands of Edgewood College this afternoon in the semi-final round of the Lake Michigan Conference Tournament.

Edgewood jumped on the board early with a goal by forward Amanda Rhyner in the 6th minute. Senior forward Amanda Smith (Neenah) would answer back when she headed home a set piece sent in by junior back Briana Plautz (Green Bay) in the 10th minute. Smith's goal was her 33rd of the season which breaks the Lakeland all-time single season mark by Meghan Wudtke (32 goals in 2001). The score would remain knotted at 1-1 heading into intermission.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alli Weiss stopped a penalty kick in late in the second half to keep the score even. Unfortunately, a Muskie defender inadvertently kicked in an own goal in the 77th minute to give Edgewood a 2-1 advantage.

Lakeland was unable to create many more opportunities in the second half as the Eagles kept the Muskies at bay. Edgewood added an insurance goal in the 89th minute as the Muskies pushed forward in an attempt to draw level.

Lakeland would fire off only 5 shots in the game with 2 on frame. The Muskies defense held Edgewood to 5 shots but conceded 8 corner kicks on the day.

The Muskie women finish the season at 12-8 and 6-1 in the LMC. The future looks bright for Lakeland as they return the bulk of their line-up next season graduating only one senior, Amanda Smith. Smith will be sorely missed as she leaves as Lakeland's all-time goal scorer with an amazing 97 career goals.
