Kicking off the 2004 season on Wednesday, the
Muskies came in with one goal in mind – win big. Lakeland delivered as
the Muskies outshot Ripon 23-7 and earned seven corner kicks to nil to
win their season opener, 6-1.
Ripon came out strong scoring at the 11:20 mark as
Jill Jones scored on a header over Lakeland goalkeeper Alli Weiss (New
Berlin).
The Muskies tied the game with an unassisted goal
by Amanda Smith (Neenah) at the 12:48 mark. Smith and the Muskies
scored three more times in the first half to take a commending 4-1 lead
by the break. The third goal came from midfielder Tracy Bins (New
Franken) off a rejected corner from the 18.
Scoring came from both ends in the second half.
Off of a set piece sweeper Briana Plautz (Green Bay) put a high shot
into the top netting of the goal putting Lakeland up 5-1.
"We have full confidence in our entire team to be
able to score, especially on a free kick just outside the eighteen, Bri
can finish that all day" said coach Tina Weaver.
Marie Reynolds (Fond du Lac) finished the game with two versus one at the 67th minute.
Weiss posted a total of five saves to help
preserve the solid victory. Leading the way offensively was Smith
scoring her first hat trick of the season.
Lakeland returns to action this weekend when
the Muskies travel to Rock Island, Ill., for the Augustana University
tournament. The Muskies take on Maryville University on Saturday at
noon. The Muskies then follow-up a match against host Augustana on
Sunday at 4 p.m.
