Despite a sluggish first half that resulted in a 0-0 stalemate at half, the women's soccer team rallied in the second half to overcome Maranatha Baptist 2-0 on Saturday.

Senior forward Nellie Weiss broke the scoring drought in the 65th minute on an assist from sophomore Jacqui Drexler, followed by a solo shot from sophomore Maggie Short ten minutes later to seal the game as the squad out-shot the Crusaders 12 to five.

"We had a really slow start and were kind of struggling to find our rhythm," said head coach Dave Madsen. "It took us awhile to work ourselves into the game mentally.  We were making it harder on ourselves than on them. I told the girls we have to find a way to win games when we don't play that well, and I'm happy we were able to do that today. Not every game is going to be our greatest game."

Madsen was pleased to see Short contributing on the scoring end, as she has been battling some injuries recently and has traditionally played a defensive role.

"We've been moving her around, trying to find the best spot, so it's been nice to have her scoring for us," he said. "She has a lot to offer the team in terms of her abilities."

He was also impressed with the efforts of Nellie Weiss, who leads the team in goals scored this season.

"She always seems to find the right spots to be in to score. It's also helpful for the rest of her teammates because they can work off her to create opportunities."

Senior net minder Alli Weiss was credited with the shutout, only having to make four saves.

Next up for the Muskies will be their final non-conference game of the season against St. Norbert on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

"They'll give us a good challenge and a chance to move some people around," said Madsen. "It'll give us a good idea of what we want to do for the rest of the year."

Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Muskie Field.
