Lakeland women's soccer drops two at Rose-Hulman tourney

The Muskies traveled to Terre Haute, Indiana this weekend to take on their first two opponents of the season at the Rose Hulman Tournament.

A combination of a few injuries and slow first half starts pushed healthy players to their limits in two hard-fought games in two days leading to a pair of losses against Greenville and Blackburn for a 0-2 start on the season.

"We got pretty banged up this weekend, but we played pretty well despite having a depleted roster," said head coach Dave Madsen. "Some girls played way more minutes than they thought they would have to."

In the first game against Greenville an early goal scored against Lakeland set the tone for the rest of the game, resulting in a 1-0 loss.

However, Madsen remained optimistic on the loss and was encouraged by the strides his team took during the game.

"That early goal made things difficult, but we tried to get a foothold," he said. "We had a slow start, but rebounded from it well. In the second half the girls responded really well and had quite a few chances to score, but we couldn't get back into the game. We were just unlucky."

On day two of tournament action the Muskies tackled Blackburn, but once again were unable to find the goal for a 2-0 loss.

"We had another slow start in the first half," Madsen said. "In the second half we had a few more chances to score, but unfortunately we couldn't convert."

Blackburn scored their first goal of the game in the second half on a penalty kick, then quickly blindsided the Muskies with another goal.

"We reacted poorly mentally," explained Madsen. "After that the offense had trouble creating good chances to score."

Despite the losses, sophomore Maggie Short was named to the All-Tournament Team for the weekend's efforts.

"Maggie did an excellent job on defense," said Madsen. "She definitely deserved it."

The Muskies will look to make a mark in the win column at their first home game this Wednesday, September 6 against Ripon College at 4 p.m.
