The Lakeland women's soccer team recorded its first victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Concordia University Chicago on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Jessica Hopfinger got the scoring started for Lakeland (1-5, 1-1 NAC) at the 25-minute mark on an unassisted goal to put Lakeland up 1-0 over the Cougars (0-8, 0-2). It was the Muskies' first goal in four games.

"I've been saying over the last few games that if our players were in the right spots we'd get a goal," said Lakeland head coach Dave Madsen. "I knew once we got one goal the flood gates would open for more goals."

Junior Amy Christenson added another goal 10 minutes into the second half on a pass from junior Maggie Short to insure a win. Senior goalie Savannah Johnson also got the first shut-out of her Lakeland career, as the Muskies held the Cougars no shots for the contest.

Madsen was pleased with his player's ability to break the scoring drought they had struggled through so far this season, as everything finally clicked into place.

"I was pleased with the way we played today," said Madsen. "We outplayed the other team a good majority of the game. I was happy with the way we were aggressive and able to get the ball back when we lost it. That is why they were unable to get any shots on goal."

Overall, the team seems to be taking steps in the right direction heading into the start of conference play.

The Muskies will be in action again tomorrow as they host UW-Whitewater. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
