The Lakeland College women's soccer team fell to 1-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference following a 2-1 loss to a tough Dominican University squad on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Lakeland.
The Muskies (1-8 overall) came out strong, matching the Stars on offense and tying the game at one goal apiece on a solo shot by senior forward
Tracy Bins in the 17th minute. However, Dominican battled back to net the game winning goal in the 33rd minute on a shot by Kelsy Holloway, sealing the game.
"I think our offensive push and intensity level were better today so that we were able to create more chances to score," said head coach Dave Madsen. "We know that we are at the competitive level with most of the teams we play, we just have those moments where we have a lapse or shut down and that are what has been costing us games."
Lakeland senior goalkeeper
Savannah Johnson recorded four saves in the loss, backed by a strong effort from the Muskies' defensive line. Dominican's net minder, Jacqui Lani, snagged five saves to stave off eight shots from Lakeland's offensive line.
"I thought we played well enough to win today," Madsen said. "We just couldn't finish here and there, and the keeper from the other team made some good saves. She's difficult to beat."
The Muskies will continue play with their last non-conference opponent of the season, Ripon College on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
"I think that will be a good challenge for us," Madsen said of the squad's upcoming game. "It will be a good way to break up conference play a little bit and will hopefully give us some momentum going into the rest of our conference schedule."
Game time with Ripon is set for 4:30 p.m. in Ripon, Wis.
