Muskies shut out by MSOE 1-0

SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's soccer team was just unable to find the back of the net on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

The result was a 1-0 loss to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (8-5 overall, 3-3 NAC) in a Northern Athletics Conference match at Lakeland.

"MSOE is a good team, but I felt like we were the better team from the start, and then we kind of just let our grip on the match slip away and we didn't finish our chances," Lakeland head coach David Madsen said. "I don't know if we were getting the best chances, but we were lacking in the attacking third today."

With the game tied 0-0 at the half, the Muskies (6-6, 3-3) put themselves in position to strike. However, the Raiders beat them to it, when Raider forward Jessica Axt found room in the middle and banged in a goal in the 75th minute.

"We were stretched apart and they caught us in transition," Madsen said. "Most of the day I think we were having some trouble clearing the ball and our pressure on the ball wasn't very good. It was kind of another case where we gave her too much time to think and [Axt] was able to pick up a pass and score."

Offensively, Lakeland mustered 10 shots, six of them coming on goal. Freshman midfielder Brittney Smit (St. Cloud) tallied three shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Leslie Oskey (Howards Grove) had two saves for the Muskies.

"We weren't really getting the chances we wanted to, and our patience was kind of off," Madsen said. "We kind of panicked in the offensive third. If we would have scored early, I think the game would have been a lot different."

The Muskies return to action Saturday to play NAC opponent Alverno College at 11 a.m. in Milwaukee.
