Rogers shines again as Muskies clip Crimson Eagles 5-2

SHEBOYGAN - Freshman forward Lindsay Rogers knocked in two first half goals as the Lakeland College women's soccer team rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Philadelphia Biblical University 5-2 on a scorching hot Saturday afternoon at Lakeland.

Players from both teams battled a bright sun and sweltering temperatures throughout the game. In the end, the Muskies were able to stay fresh and emerge with their second non-conference victory in as many games this season.

"It was definitely really hot, but I think we all worked together as a team and fed off our energy. I thought we worked very well together with good combinations in scoring goals," Rogers said.

Rogers, a Sheboygan native and graduate of South High, now has four goals in her first two collegiate games after recording a pair of scores in a 5-0 victory at Northland Baptist on Friday night.

"I think that's what we've been missing in the past couple years, is somebody who can just create goals out of nothing sometimes it's big," said Lakeland head coach Dave Madsen. "Having that available to us is exciting because now teams are going to have to prepare in a lot of different ways and find a way to try to stop us."

Rogers scored her first goal in the 17th minute. She sprinted in from behind after senior forward Amy Christensen (Dodgeville) got tangled up with a defender and pushed it past the goalie from 10 yards out.

She added a second off a beautiful overhead pass down the right side from freshman midfielder Brittney Smit ( St. Cloud ) in the 35th minute. Rogers took one dribble and hooked it into the left side of the net.

"The second one I got a really nice ball from Brittney Smit, she sent it through and I just had a clear shot," Rogers said. "The first one was kind of like everyone was in there, but I got it in there, so that was cool.

"Hopefully I can keep it going, it's been pretty awesome so far, so hopefully it keeps up," she added.

After the Crimson Eagles (0-2) scored the first goal just under eight minutes in the game, the Muskies rattled off four unanswered goals, three of them in the first half, to take a 4-1 lead early in the second half that they would not relinquish.

"We came out a little slow, I think the goal kind of woke us up and it was good to see that we reacted to it," Madsen said. "Some of the goals we got were a little scrappy today, but that's good to see, and the fact that we're not giving up at any point in the game is a good thing."

Christensen also found the back of the net twice for the Muskies.

After fighting for a goal in front of the net in the 39th minute just before the half, she weaved her way through the defense two minutes into the second period to give Lakeland a three-goal lead.

"Amy does a lot of tireless work just up and down the field, which sometimes goes unnoticed, but she does a lot to create a lot of goals for us," Madsen said. "It makes things a lot easier for a lot of other players, so the fact that she could get a pair of goals for us today is great."

After Philadelphia Biblical scored in the 87th minute to cut the margin to two, senior midfielder Megan Stock (Libertyville, Ill.) snatched a pass from freshman midfielder Kristina Borts ( Greenfield ) on the left side and booted it in with just over 30 seconds to play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Whitney England (Ashwaubenon) notched four saves for Lakeland .

Lakeland will host Elmhurst this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. before heading to UW-Whitewater next Saturday for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
