Muskies unable to answer in 2-1 loss

The Lakeland College women's soccer team was unable to respond to a pair of Concordia Chicago goals early in the second half as the Muskies lost 2-1 Saturday afternoon in their first home Northern Athletics Conference game of the season.

After the first goal of the game by Concordia from Blythe Harkenrider five minutes out of halftime, the Muskies (0-7, 0-3 NAC) quickly responded a minute later off of a corner kick. Sophomore Autumn Gaylor (Ingleside, Ill.) put in her first goal of the season after a corner kick. Her first shot hit the back of a Concordia defender and she collected the rebound to float a shot into the upper left corner of the net.

Cheyenne Martinez-Trevino answered for Concordia (2-5, 1-2)with her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 60th minute, breaking away from the Lakeland defense to find the back of the net to put Concordia up 2-1.

Hannah Landgraf, playing in her first game with the soccer team, nearly scored on a break away a minute after subbing into the contest. Fed the ball on a breakaway, she was denied when her shot hit Concordia goalkeeper Jessica Henrick square in the chest and was caught.

Concordia out-shot Lakeland 13-12 and both teams had five shots on goal in an evenly contested match.

Lakeland returns to action with a non-conference match on Thursday, September 24 against Lawrence in Appleton. Start time is scheduled for 4:30.
