Quentin Barthe (
Fr.-Tabanac, France) scored the lone win for the Lakeland College men's tennis team in an 8-1 loss to Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday in the team's final home dual match of the season at the Sports Core.
Barthe defeated Mason Sauder 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles for his fifth singles win of the season. The Muskies were competitive in several other matches but dropped to 1-10 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, while MSOE clinched a spot in the NACC Tournament by improving to 9-9 overall and 5-1 in conference.
Lakeland narrowly missed a second win at No. 6 singles, where
Koki Saito (
Sr.-Tokyo, Japan) was defeated by Austin Fite in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Fellow senior
Paul Elzinga (
Howards Grove, Wis.) also was defeated at No. 3 singles by Andrew Kosasih 6-4, 6-2.
The team's top performance in doubles came at the No. 1 level, where
Matt Stolz (
So.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) and
Greg Boknevitz (
Jr.-St. Francis, Wis.) was defeated 8-4 by John Price and Tom Smith. Barthe and Elzinga also competed at No. 2 doubles and lost to Sauder and Kyle Fassbender 8-3.
The Muskies conclude their season Saturday with matches at Edgewood College in Madison at 10 a.m. and Marian University in Fond du Lac at 2 p.m.
