FRANKLIN, Wis. – Tyler Doyle tripled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Milwaukee School of Engineering defeated the Lakeland College baseball team 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
The Raiders also came back for a 14-4 win in seven innings in the second game, completing a sweep of the Muskies in the twinbill. The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games were played Tuesday after being initially postponed due to weather on Sunday.
Lakeland (6-11, 3-3 NACC) was unable to follow up its two wins over Marian University on Monday and in fact had the tables turned. The Muskies lost the first game in similar fashion to how they defeated the Sabres on Monday, and then saw MSOE pull away in the second.
Lakeland bounced back in the opener after the Raiders scored twice in the fourth, coming back with two in the fifth.
Jody Harrison (
Fr.-Pontiac, Mich.) stayed hot in clutch situations, hitting a two-run double to score
Bryce Skelton (
Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) and
Drew Richard (
So.-Kieler, Wis.) and tie the game.
Jeremy Surowiec (
Fr.-Lowell, Ind.) pitched eight strong innings, allowing seven hits and two unearned runs with six strikeouts, but the Raiders quickly struck against reliever
Luke Kelly (
Sr.-Marinette, Wis.) in the ninth. Case Magyar led off the inning with a single, and Doyle drove a triple to right center to score Magyar with the winning run.
MSOE scored early and often in the second game, scoring two runs each in the first and second innings before blowing it open with four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Jimmy Carrington and Owen Burnikel did much of the damage, combining for six hits, six runs scored and 10 runs batted in. That included six from Carrington, including a three-run homer, plus a pair of homers by Burnikel.
Luke Bacci (
Sr.-Grayslake, Ill.) went 3-for-4 and both
Jared Rear (
Sr.-Belleville, Wis.) and
Travis Regalado (
Fr.-Willcox, Ariz.) both had two hits each. Rear doubled in a run in the third and added an RBI single in the sixth, as Lakeland scored three times.
Joey McFeely (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) started and went four innings and allowed 11 hits and eight runs while striking out four.
Christopher Leopold (
So.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) and
James Antley (
Fr.-Luling, La.) also came on in relief and allowed a combined six runs.
After playing back-to-back days, the Muskies will have a few days to relax before hosting Aurora (Ill.) University on Saturday for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
