Game Recap: Baseball |

Aurora’s Lipscomb haunts Muskies twice in ninth inning

Aurora (Ill.) University's Adam Lipscomb was the hero twice in one day, coming up with a pair of clutch ninth-inning hits to lead his team to a pair of wins over the Lakeland College baseball team Saturday afternoon.

Lipscomb came up twice in huge situations at the end of games, and both times the Spartans' clean-up hitter delivered. His three-run double in the ninth inning led Aurora to a 7-4 win in the first game, and his three-run homer gave his team an 8-5 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Muskies (6-13 overall, 3-5 NACC) were in range of victory throughout both games, rallying from deficits on multiple occasions. Lakeland was haunted by six errors on the day, though, as well as the stubbornness of Aurora (13-15 overall, 4-6 NACC) in its last at bats.

The Muskies were one strike away from winning the opener, with the Spartans down to their final out and starting pitcher Luke Mandich (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) ahead in the count against Dillon Popovich. The Aurora first baseman looked at a 1-2 pitch that was called just off the corner, and he eventually worked his way for a walk to load the bases. Lipscomb came up next and wasted no time jumping on the first offering, driving a pitch to straight away center all the way to the wall and clearing the bases.

The two teams went back and forth in the second game, with Lakeland tying the game in the eighth on a solo home run by Connor Hilburn (Fr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) for his first collegiate round-tripper. Once again, the Spartans responded in the ninth, with the first two batters reaching on walks. Lipscomb later came up with runners at first and third and hit a towering fly down the left field line that hit off the top of the wall and then bounced off the foul pole, which was ruled a home run.

The Muskies were the team hitting homers for most of the day, finishing with four over the two games. Bryce Skelton (Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) hit home runs in both games, including a two-run shot in the second game, and Jared Rear (Sr.-Belleville, Wis.) also added a solo homer to start the scoring in the opener.

Hilburn and Skelton both had three hits on the day, while Peyton Knoll (Fr.-Linden, Mich.) added two hits in the first contest and Kenny Pekarek (Jr.-Sagola, Mich.) added two hits in the second game.

Mandich went the distance in the first game and struck out 10 over nine innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs (four earned). Travis Regalado (Fr.-Willcox, Ariz.) went eight innings in the second game and allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts, while Ryan Oharriz (Fr.-Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the loss in relief.

Lakeland is in action again tomorrow when it faces Edgewood College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
