Jared Rear (
Sr.-Belleville, Wis.) doubled to send home the tying and winning runs, getting the Lakeland College baseball team started on a doubleheader sweep of Lawrence University with a 10-9 win in the first game Tuesday afternoon.
The Muskies rallied in the final inning in the opener and then added a 17-3 win in the second game to sweep both seven-inning games. Lakeland was victorious in its final home games of the season and its final non-conference matchups.
Rear went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs in the opener and finished with seven runs batted in over the two games. His final at bat was the biggest, capping a comeback from a 9-5 deficit and a quick rally from a one-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh.
Luke Bacci (
Sr.-Grayslake, Ill.) and
Jody Harrison (
Fr.-Pontiac, Mich.) both walked to start the inning and moved up 90 feet each after a wild pitch. Bacci followed with a booming fly to right center that one-hopped the wall and scored Bacci with the tying run and Harrison with the winning run.
Rear also added an RBI single in the second inning and a two-run single in the fourth, part of a four-run frame in which the Muskies (13-22 overall) briefly took the lead at 5-4, before the Vikings (10-22 overall) came right back with five runs in the top of the fifth.
Lakeland had 11 hits in the opener yet was still outhit 14-11 in a game involving a pair of tired and shorthanded pitching staffs. The teams combined to issue 19 walks, and the Vikings' first three pitchers all were on the mound for the first time this season.
The Muskies added another 12 hits in the second game and lit the scoreboard for five runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Rear and
Connor Hilburn (
Fr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) both hit home runs and numerous players contributed to the offensive onslaught.
Hilburn and
Brooks Repking (
Fr.-Hamburg, Wis.) both drove in three runs each, Rear, Bacci and
Bryan Bridges (
Fr.-North Chicago, Ill.) both knocked in a pair, and Hilburn,
Bryce Skelton (
Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) and
Kenny Pekarek (
Jr.-Sagola, Mich.) all had two hits each. Ten different players scored runs, nine delivered hits and seven drove in at least one run.
Jack Shevalier (
Fr.-Helena, Mont.) threw six strong innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs but striking out nine, the second-most by a Lakeland pitcher this season.
Luke Kelly (
Sr.-Marinette, Wis.) came on to finish out the second game after also pitching the final inning and getting the win in the opener.
The Muskies close out their season Friday when they travel to face Concordia University Chicago for a doubleheader beginning at noon in River Forest, Ill.
