Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Campos scores 32 as Muskies fend off stubborn Knights

Carlos Campos (So.-Janesville, Wis.) posted career highs with 32 points and 10 rebounds and the Lakeland University men's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 93-85 win over Martin Luther (Minn.) College Sunday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Campos made 12 of 24 shots from the field and also led the team on the glass as the Muskies outlasted the determined Knights from New Ulm, Minn., in a game that was close throughout. Lakeland held on despite never shaking the guests and posted two straight wins to open the season for the first time since 2014-15.

Lakeland and Martin Luther went up and down the court all game, combining for 166 shot attempts from the field and making a combined 22 three-pointers. The Muskies were the slightly more efficient team, though, making 45% of their shots (36 of 80), and then closed the game out strong at the free-throw line as the Knights made a last attempt to rally.

Lakeland led the entire second half, stretching the lead to 10 points on three occasions before MLC (0-2 overall) would close back in. The Muskies had their last double-digit lead when Campos scored inside to make it 77-67 with 7:31 left, but the Knights got back within four when Joey Behm converted a three-point play to make it 79-75 with 2:05 remaining.

The Muskies responded, though, as Shakur Jinad (So.-Chicago, Ill.) and Pat McDonald (Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) both scored on layups, and Lakeland then hit eight straight free throws in the final 46 seconds. Martin Luther could never get closer than five points in the final minute.

The Knights started the game quickly, hitting four three-pointers in the first 2:14 for an early 14-5 lead. The Muskies started to heat up, only to see MLC pull back out to a 27-18 lead before Lakeland turned momentum with a 16-2 run. Lakeland eventually took a 51-44 lead into the locker room, with Campos scoring 18 points and the Muskies hitting eight three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

Jinad scored 18 points off the bench and McDonald added 15 points plus a career-best eight assists. Freshman Zach Hasenstein (Sheboygan, Wis.) also contributed 11 points.

Ian Paulsen scored 21 points and added a game-high 13 rebounds for Martin Luther, which shot 37.2% (32 of 86) and out-rebounded Lakeland 58-44. T.J. Babinec added 18 points as all five Knights scored in double figures.

The Muskies now jump into Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play Tuesday night when they travel to face Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
