Milwaukee School of Engineering scored 10 straight points in the game's final minutes for the decisive run to defeat the Lakeland University men's basketball team 86-77 Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
MSOE had the final surge in a game that included 17 lead changes and defeated the Muskies for the second time in a span of 12 days. The Raiders have given Lakeland both of its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference losses early in the season and dropped the Muskies to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the NACC.
Lakeland and MSOE went back and forth all game, with neither team leading by more than seven points until the Raiders' decisive run. The Muskies led by two at 72-70 when
Pat McDonald (
Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) hit a three-pointer with 4:03 left in the game, but MSOE took the lead back when Tegan Miles tipped in a miss while fouled and converted the free throw to make it 73-72.
Lakeland missed twice on it next time down and Jason Palesse made two free throws to put the Raiders' lead to three. The Muskies then missed free throws on each of their next two possessions, including the front end of a one-and-one while down three. MSOE stretched out the lead with Matthew Kirmse hitting a three and Miles knocking down an 18-foot jumper to make it 80-72, and Lakeland never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
The Muskies made 11 three-pointers in the game and held a slim 36-35 halftime lead. They also rallied from six points down early in the second half, finally going ahead 67-65 on a
Carlos Campos (
So.-Janesville, Wis.) jumper with 5:55 remaining and leading by two points on two other occasions in the late going.
Lakeland also had a rally in the first half, as MSOE (3-2 overall, 2-1 NACC) led 17-10 just over six minutes into the game before the Muskies put together a 10-2 spurt to lead 20-19 midway through the half on a three-pointer by
Zach Hasenstein (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.). The game then settled down into a tight back-and-forth, with neither leading by more than three the rest of a first half that alone had six ties and 12 lead changes.
Campos scored 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a perfect 4 of 4 from three-point range. McDonald also scored 18 and
Joshuan McNeal (
Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) scored 10, including an alley oop dunk on a fast break pass from Hasenstein in the second half. McNeal also added a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Muskies shot 43.3% for the game, making 29 of 67 shots, and also hit 11 of 26 from long range. Lakeland was just 8-for-15 (53.3%) from the free-throw line, though, and also was out-rebounded by the Raiders 44-37.
Miles scored 22 points for the Raiders, who hit 29 of 61 from the field (47.5%) and 24 of 33 foul shots (72.7%). Palesse scored 19 and dished out six assists and Kirmse added 17. MSOE completed a sweep of the Muskies this season, having also posted an 84-64 win in Milwaukee on Nov. 21.
