The Lakeland University men's basketball team ramped up its three-point attack early to get a lead and late to preserve it on the way to an emotional 95-79 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Five Muskies scored in double figures as Lakeland was victorious in the return of former Lakeland head coach Aaron Aanonsen. The Muskies also improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and snapped a four-game losing streak to the Warriors that dated back to 2015.
Aanonsen coached Lakeland for the past nine years and was one of the most successful coaches in the program's history before taking the head job at NACC rival Wisconsin Lutheran this past spring. His former assistant
Sam Schroeder and the Muskies got the better of the first matchup between the teams since then, with Lakeland putting on another long-range shooting display.
The Muskies hit 13 of 31 three-point attempts, their fourth game this season with at least 10 made three-pointers. Nine of those came in the first half, when Lakeland quickly swayed the game's course over a span of just over five minutes.
A 28-8 Muskies run in the first half turned the tide in the game for good after the guests had gotten off to a good start. Wisconsin Lutheran (1-5 overall, 1-3 NACC) led 21-15 after Collin Kennedy hit a jumper with 12:56 left in the half, but Lakeland soon had turned that into a 43-29 lead with still more than seven minutes left in the half.
The Muskies never trailed again the rest of the way, even as the Warriors drew close on several occasions. Lakeland led 54-46 at halftime and held a slim lead throughout the second half, though WLC got as close as three at 62-59 and then back within four on three other later occasions.
It was after that final time when the Warriors drew within 77-73 that the Muskies stretched it out again. Three-pointers on three consecutive possessions turned a four-point lead into nine with 3:07 left, and Wisconsin Lutheran closed out the game strong, outscoring Lutheran 12-2 over the final 3:27.
Carlos Campos (
So.-Janesville, Wis.) scored 19 points and was one of five Lakeland players scoring in double figures.
Zach Hasenstein (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) scored 18 points and added five steals,
Eric Nygaard (
Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) scored 16 off the bench,
Shakur Jinad (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) tallied 13 and
Pat McDonald (
Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) added 11.
Lakeland shot 46.5% for the game, making 33 of 71 shots. The Muskies also held WLC to 42.2% shooting (27 of 64), including just 35.3% in the second half when the Warriors made just 12 of 34 shots.
Collin Kennedy scored 28 points and added 12 rebounds while making 14 of 18 free throw tries for Wisconsin Lutheran. Chase Nowak added 18. The Warriors also were unable to match the Muskies' outside shooting, hitting just 4 of 13 three-point attempts.
Lakeland is home again Saturday when it welcomes Aurora University for an NACC tilt at 2 p.m.
