Edgewood College pounded out 32 hits over two games and kept the pressure on all day in sweeping two games from the Lakeland University baseball team Monday as part of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
The Eagles prevailed by scores of 13-2 and 12-2 as the Muskies again struggled to hold down a conference foe. Lakeland dropped to 10-16 overall and is now 2-8 in NACC play.
Edgewood (16-10 overall, 6-6 NACC) scored a run in the first inning of the first game and then added six runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead in game one. That set the stage for the rest of the afternoon, as the Eagles played from in front almost exclusively.
Lakeland's one rally came in the fourth inning of the second game.
Drew Richard (
Jr.-Kieler, Wis.) had three hits in the nightcap, and his first of two doubles in the game scored
Brandon Punzel (
Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.) and
Christian Arthurs (
Fr.-North Fond du Lac, Wis.) to tie the game at 2-2. Edgewood came back with four runs in the next inning, though, and the Muskies never could cut into the lead after that.
Punzel and
Travis Regalado (
So.-Willcox, Ariz.) both led Lakeland with two hits and an RBI each in the first game, and Regalado added two hits in the second game to share the team lead with Richard at four hits on the day.
Jeremy Surowiec (
So.-Lowell, Ind.) started the opener and took the loss, throwing five innings and allowing nine hits and eight runs (four earned).
Michael Austin (
Fr.-Glendale, Ariz.) started the second game and allowed 14 hits and six runs (four earned) in five innings.
Jack Shevalier (
So.-Helena, Mont.) had the best performance in relief by a Muskie, pitching two scoreless innings in the second contest and striking out three.
