RIVER FOREST, Ill. –
Aaron Almedina (
Sr.-Burnsville, Minn.) earned the first individual match win of the season for the Lakeland University men's tennis team against Concordia University Chicago Saturday morning.
Almedina defeated Rudy Croon of Concordia 6-3, 6-1 at Number 6 singles in his first collegiate match playing at singles. It was the first win of the season for a Muskie player and came in the team's 8-1 loss to the Cougars in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
Lakeland played its most competitive match of the season, with Almedina's win as well as a number of close results in both singles and doubles. Aside from the win,
Dylan Skewis (
Sr.-Ishpeming, Mich.) was defeated 7-5, 6-2 by Ben Fluga at No. 5 singles, while
Andrew L'Empereur (
Fr.-West Allis, Wis.) nearly won the first set before falling 6-4, 6-0 to Joshua Krzyzanowski at No. 3 singles.
Kenichi Yamamoto (
Fr.-Tokyo, Japan) also won five games in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Ryan Popowcer at No. 4 singles, while
Nick Lange (
Fr.-Mukwonago, Wis.) was defeated 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles by Alex Vieaux. The Muskies also just missed a win at No. 2 doubles as L'Empereur and Lange were defeated 8-6 by Popowcer and Fluga.
Lakeland (0-6 overall, 0-2 NACC) also was defeated by Dominican (Ill.) University 9-0 in a second dual match Saturday. The Muskies' best result at singles came from Lange, who was defeated 6-0, 6-2 by John Mysz at No. 1. Lange and L'Empereur also dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 1 doubles to Mysz and Camden Knights.
Lakeland is back in action Thursday when it travels to face Concordia University Wisconsin at 4 p.m. in Mequon.
