GREEN BAY –
Kassahun Lehman (
So.-Whitelaw, Wis.) picked up where he left off after a strong freshman campaign, performing well to lead the Lakeland University men's and women's cross country teams at the Tom Barry Invitational hosted by St. Norbert College.
Lehman finished 22nd individually of 114 competitors in the men's race, posting a time of 22 minutes 13.3 seconds. He finished just seven seconds from a top 20 finish and less than 20 seconds from the top 15 on the four-mile course at Colburn Park in Green Bay.
Lehman also led a beefed-up contingent of Muskies cross country teams that included the men's program's first time fielding five runners to post a team score in a meet since the 2001 Lake Michigan Conference Championship. The Muskies finished 10th in the team standings, totaling 299 points and easily outdistancing Northland College and Marian University in the field of 12 teams.
Spencer Miesfeld (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) was the next-best finisher behind Lehman, placing 89th with a time of 26:02.0.
Chase Lindgren (
Jr.-Campbellsport, Wis.) wasn't far behind in 93rd with a clocking of 26:43.5.
Alex Kleiber (
So.-Plymouth, Wis.) came in 112th at 31:27.3, while
Aaron Barth (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) was one place behind with a time of 32:45.9.
The Lakeland women's team also fielded six runners, though a pair were disqualified to make for four finishers. Sophomore
Rachel Ulatowski (
Fredonia, Wis.) led the way by placing 122nd in a field of 152 with a time of 26:56.1 on the five-kilometer course.
Zoe Schraymeyer (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) was next, finishing 136th individually with a time of 32:13.5.
Cailyn Branback (
So.-Niagara, Wis.) was just two places behind with a time of 32:32.6, while
Amelia Sitte finished in 37:31.3 for 142nd place.
Placing full teams was a goal of Lakeland co-coaches
Pete Barth and
Julie Steinert when they took over the program, and the men posting a team score already fulfills one of the goals for the team for this season.
"Us coaches are so proud of these runners," said
Pete Barth. "Resurrecting Lakeland's cross country program is a challenge, but an incredibly satisfying one. The 11 Muskies who competed today cheered for each other like crazy."
Lakeland competes again next weekend when it travels to the Ken Weidt Classic hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin, with the women's race starting at 11 a.m. and the men's to follow at noon.
