MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –
Hope Cerney (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute and the Lakeland University women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 win at North Central (Minn.) University Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies accomplished something they were unable to last year, or even the year before, winning on the road and in their first match of the year. Lakeland posted a winning record at home last year but was 0-8 away from John Taylor Memorial Field, and it hadn't won away from campus since Oct. 4 at Rockford University.
Cerney was the team's leading scorer a year ago, and she scored for the first time this season with 8:04 left in the second half. Her unassisted goal would prove to be the final one and made the difference in a match that was scoreless for nearly 80 minutes after two early goals.
The host Rams (1-1 overall) got on the board just 1 minute 36 seconds in when Cheyenne Brown scored with an assist from Payton Swoboda. Lakeland answered back quickly, though, as freshman
Amanda Buckler (
Sheridan, Wyo.) scored at 4:11 with an assist from
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) to tie it.
The rest of the match went back-and-forth, with both teams making surges. North Central put three shots on goal in the first seven minutes of the second half, but Muskies goalkeeper
Erin Tomlinson (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.) stopped all three, part of her seven saves for the match. Lakeland also made pushes in the second half, with freshman forward
Skylar Garza (
Hartford, Wis.) putting two shots on goal, including one that was swept away by a Rams defender.
Tomlinson picked up her first collegiate win in goal. Garza finished with three shot attempts, while Cerney and
Jenna Borts (
So.-Oak Creek, Wis.) added two shots each.
Lakeland tries for its second straight road win on Sunday when it faces the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 2:30 p.m. in Superior, Wis.
