Jacob Larson (
Fr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) won both of his singles matches to lead the Lakeland University men's tennis team as it opened its season with a pair of non-conference matches Saturday on the indoor courts at Sports Core.
The Muskies were defeated by Lawrence University 8-1 in their first match, with Larson picking up the team's lone win. Lakeland then lost a hard-fought dual with Knox (Ill.) College 6-3, finishing 0-2 on the day.
Larson played at No. 4 singles and posted a three-set win in his first match, defeating Lawrence's Andrea Arivella 3-6, 7-6, 10-2. He added another three-set win against Knox, again losing the first set before coming back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dobbin Pine.
Three others had a part in wins against Knox, including
Nate Nanda (
So.-Elkhorn, Wis.) defeating Kyle Yang 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 5 singles. The other win came at No. 3 doubles, where
Bill Behrmann (
Sr.-Long Lake, Wis.) and
Aaron Smith (
Fr.-Lake Geneva, Wis.) earned an 8-6 win over Misha Broyle and Oscar Sanchez.
Nanda and
Nick Lange (
Jr.-Mukwonago, Wis.) also went to a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles against Knox before losing 8-7 (7-4) to Pine and Brad Newland. The duo also lost a close 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles to start the day against Lawrence's Ariella and Evan Oriel.
The Muskies will return to play on Friday, March 1 when they host Ripon College at 1 p.m. at Sports Core.
