Series history:Â 6th meeting, Illinois Tech leads 4-1
Lakeland and Illinois Institute of Technology meet Saturday for the third time as Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rivals, after the Scarlet Hawks joined the conference in 2018. Illinois Tech won the last meeting in Chicago, topping the Muskies 5-0 exactly two years ago on Oct. 23, 2019. IIT also won the most recent match at Lakeland, rolling to an 8-0 win Oct. 17, 2018. The Muskies scored their lone win over Illinois Tech in their first-ever meeting in the 2005 season opener, as Laura Engel scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Marian 3-0 Wednesday
The Muskies were in catch-up mode early, as the Sabres scored two goals in the first 13:52, including the opening goal just over six minutes into the match. Lakeland was unable to get on the board despite several opportunities, including five shot attempts (two on goal) from
Virginia Perez.
Haley Rich made four saves in goal as Lakeland played respectably but was unable to win a second straight after defeating Alverno 4-0 last Saturday for its second win of the season.
Illinois Tech last time out: Lost at #13 Chicago 3-0 Thursday
The Scarlet Hawks played for the second straight day and fell in a crosstown non-conference game to a Maroons team ranked 13th in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll. Chicago broke a scoreless tie in the 39th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime and added two more goals before the midpoint of the second half. Hailey Flannagan made five saves in goal for Illinois Tech, which was outshot 14-5. IIT was playing just one day after a 6-1 win over Concordia Chicago in NACC play, as Laura Rios scored two goals and added an assist and Jayla Anaya, Julia Taliana and Kenzie Tokuchi all added a goal and an assist each.
Senior Day: The Muskies are celebrating Senior Day Saturday and will be honoring five senior members of the team at halftime.
Hope Cerney,
Skylar Garza,
Abby Gastrau,
Tracey Sery and
Erin Tomlinson are all in their final seasons with the team, and all four are four-year members of the program, with Cerney joining the team in 2017 and her fellow seniors the following year in 2018. Four of the five have played this season; Sery has not played due to an injury suffered earlier this spring.
