Game Recap: Baseball |

Lakeland sweeps two from MSOE, moves into tie atop NACC North

GLENDALE, Wis. – Jack Banks (Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) piled up six hits and six RBIs over two games and the Lakeland University baseball team moved into a tie atop the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division by defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering twice to wrap up the teams' four-game weekend home-and-home series.

The Muskies prevailed by scores of 12-5 in the first game and 10-4 in the second, following up Saturday's twinbill split with a road sweep on Sunday. By taking three of four from the previous division leaders, Lakeland surpassed the Raiders in the standings and is now tied for the division lead with Marian University.

The Muskies (10-8 overall, 6-2 NACC North) brought a punishing offensive attack with them for the day, banging out 29 hits over two games. Banks was one of many to have success and had a pair of big games, going 4-for-6 in the opener with four runs batted in and two runs scored in the first game and then adding two hits and two RBIs in the second.

Hunter Frisk (So.-Manteca, Calif.) also notched a pair of three-hit games and drove in four runs in the first game, including parts in a pair of big innings. His RBI double to score Banks capped a five-run second inning, and he later added a two-run single as part of a four-run fifth that gave the Muskies a 9-2 lead.

Tyler LaMack (Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) also homered for the second straight day, hitting a three-run shot as part of a four-run opening inning in game two. Lakeland would add two more runs in both the third and fourth innings and single tallies in the seventh and eighth, pounding out 15 hits total in the game.

The Muskies also received a pair of strong outings on the mound that prevented a bullpen from being worn out over the busy weekend. Peyton Domangue (Fr.-Thibodaux, La.) went eight innings in the opener and allowed 10 hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out four, earning his third win of the season.

Nathan Hemmerling (So.-Riverside, Calif.) started the second game and made it just two innings before leaving the game, but Tyler Penny (Fr.-River Falls, Wis.) came in and did excellent work from the bullpen. Penny covered the final seven innings, allowing eight hits and three runs (one earned) and picked up his fourth win of the season.

Kellen Hodges (Fr.-Littleton, Colo.) also posted five hits on the day and scored four runs, including a steal of home in the second game. Collin Schutz (Jr.-Saint Amant, La.) added three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, OakLee Spens (Fr.-Burbank, Calif.) drove in two runs and Kaylab Owings (Fr.-Bagdad, Ariz.) added two hits and scored four times.

MSOE (8-10 overall, 5-3 NACC) fell behind early in both games after both of its starting pitchers struggled out of the gate. Derek Polczynski and Brad Demkovich combined to throw 4 2/3 innings and allowed 11 hits and 11 runs (eight earned) in their starts as the Raiders fell behind early in both games.

Lakeland next will face Wisconsin Lutheran College for a four-game series next weekend starting with two games in Milwaukee on Saturday starting at noon.
