Lakeland cruises past Maranatha Baptist for non-league doubleheader sweep

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University baseball team took full advantage of a non-conference opportunity with numerous players contributing in a pair of wins over Maranatha Baptist University Thursday afternoon.

The Muskies routed the Sabercats by scores of 13-2 and 17-0 in the doubleheader, including the second win coming in five innings after brief heavy winds, rain and lightning caused the suspension and end of the game in the fifth inning. Lakeland improved to 13-11 overall with the wins in its final non-conference games of the season.

The Muskies scored in nine of their 10 innings with an at bat against the Sabercats (0-16 overall), including a nine-run first inning in the second game. Fifteen different players picked up at least one hit over the two games, and 16 players scored at least one run.

Seven different players also recorded a triple on the day, including Tyler LaMack (Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) and Lane Sobieski (Fr.-Berlin, Wis.) in the first game. Hunter Frisk (So.-Manteca, Calif.) also added two hits and drove in four runs and OakLee Spens (Fr.-Burbank, Calif.) added a pair of hits and scored three runs.

Spens also was one of five players to register a triple in the second game, including one of three in the nine-run first inning. Drew Nielsen (Sr.-Orange City, Iowa) and Brian Biggs (So.-Romeoville, Ill.) also added back-to-back triples earlier in the inning, with Nielsen driving in a pair of runs.

Pacey Kolkema (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) also added an RBI triple for his first collegiate hit and Nathan Blakesley (Fr.-Colorado Springs, Colo.) added a three-bagger as part of a two-hit game in which he also scored three times. Biggs also added a two-run double in the second inning and Mason Valenstein (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) drove in three runs in the game, including a two-run single.

A day of firsts also saw Mason Pechy (Sr.-Diamond Bar, Calif.), Adam Tichy (Fr.-Round Lake, Ill.) and Tyler Penny (Fr.-River Falls, Wis.) also all pick up their first collegiate hits, and both Pechy and Penny drove in runs.

Steven Lozano (Sr.-Anaheim, Calif.) started and allowed two unearned runs in two innings in the opener, while Andrew Erbstoesser (Fr.-Union, Ill.) pitched two hitless innings and struck out two to get the win.

Kyle Wallace (Sr.-Willard, Mo.) finished the first game with 1 1/3 shutout innings and then started game two, allowing three hits and fanning three in 2 2/3 innings. Valenstein came on next and picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Muskies now get ready for a big four-game Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division series this weekend against Concordia University Wisconsin. The teams play first at Lakeland with a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
