Series history:Â 22nd meeting, Lakeland leads 18-3
Lakeland and Alverno are meeting for the 21st consecutive season, and the Muskies have won the last six meetings in the series, including a 4-0 victory last season in Milwaukee a year ago this weekend.
Virginia Perez scored two goals and
Skylar Garza and
Marlen Reyes also added goals in the win. Lakeland also won the last matchup at John Taylor Memorial Field, a 3-2 win March 21, 2021 in the spring 2020-21 season abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alverno's last win over the Muskies came over six years ago with a 6-0 win in Milwaukee on Sept. 16, 2016, capping a four-year stretch where the Inferno won three of four meetings.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Edgewood 6-0 Wednesday
The Muskies played well for a half in the rain before the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference leaders pulled away quickly in the second half with a flurry of three goals in less than five minutes. Lakeland trailed 2-0 at halftime and only after a pair of Edgewood goals under unusual circumstances, including a 50-yard free kick that skidded on the wet turf and bounced over the goalkeeper's head.
Haley Rich and
Faith Turley combined to make 11 saves in goal, while Turley,
Hanna Brouch and
Allison Solberg Kieler registered the Muskies' three shot attempts.
Alverno last time out: Lost at Concordia Chicago 7-0 Wednesday
The Inferno had a similar match as the Muskies on Wednesday, hanging close for a half before the opponent pulled away early in the second half. Alverno trailed 2-0 at halftime after CUC scored twice in the first ten minutes, but the Coguars scored 38 seconds after halftime and then in the 59th minute began a spree of four goals in a span of just over eight minutes. Georgia Wise made 14 saves for the undermanned Alverno team, which has played with a short deck most of the season and is winless with a scoreless tie against Mount Mary its best result of the season. The Inferno's matches also do not count as NACC matches this season due to violations of conference policy.
Senior Day: The Muskies have one more home match left this season after today but will be celebrating the team's two seniors this morning.
Haley Rich and
Riley Jahnke are the lone seniors on this year's team, including Rich being a four-year member of the team while Jahnke is in her third year with the squad. Rich is a two-year starter at goalkeeper and has ranked among the NACC leaders in saves the last two years. Jahnke is a three-year starter who followed in her sister Taylor and brother Garrett's footsteps playing soccer for the Muskies, and is graduating from Lakeland in December in 2 1/2 years.
