Series history:Â 39th meeting, Marian leads 26-12
The Sabres are the most-played opponent in Lakeland women's soccer history, as the teams have faced off 38 times prior. Marian has dominated the series of late, winning the last 15 matchups including most recently a 2-0 win in Fond du Lac last year. Emily Gordillo and Brianna Guelig scored goals for the Sabres, who outshot the Muskies 20-8 for the match, Lakeland last defeated Marian in the final game of the 2008 season, scoring a 2-1 win as Amy Christenson scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute. The Sabres won the first 10 meetings in the series, which began in 1993, before the Muskies earned their first win in 1999 and proceeded to win 11 straight.
Lakeland last time out: Lost to Edgewood 1-0 Saturday
The Muskies added to their series of near-misses and frustrations on offense in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play, falling to the Eagles by a goal. A penalty kick in the 66th minute after a foul near the outer edges of the 18-yard box proved to be the difference. Lakeland was held scoreless for its fifth straight game and played its fourth game decided by a goal or less in conference, including a trio of ties.
Ingrid Steinbock made eight saves in goal and the Muskies limited the Eagles offensively in ways better than indicated by the 18-2 difference in shots, with very few quality opportunities for either team. Lakeland fell on Senior Day for five members of the team:
Jenna Caterino,
Gwynn Manteufel,
Alondra Reyes,
Marlen Reyes and
Abby Runkel.
Marian last time out: Defeated Benedictine 4-0 Saturday
The Sabres picked up their third NACC win of the season by shutting out the Eagles at home. Isabella Goodson posted a hat trick, with goals in the 11th, 25th and 56th minutes. Baylee Alvarado also added a goal early as Marian led 3-0 at halftime and bounced back after losses to Dominican and Concordia Wisconsin.
The Sabres have slipped some this year after last year's 12-4-4 overall record that included a 10-2-1 mark in the NACC, but Marian is still in the thick of the chase for a spot in the NACC Tournament. The Sabres are tied with Concordia Chicago for seventh in the standings entering Wednesday night.
