Series history: 20th meeting, Concordia leads 12-7
With one notable exception, the series between the Muskies and Cougars has belonged of late to Concordia, which has won 11 of the teams' last 12 meetings. The Cougars won last year's game 4-0 at home in River Forest, and also won by a 5-0 count in 2022, also at home. The last game at Taylor Field was played Sept. 29, 2021, and also was the most recent Lakeland win in the series. The Muskies prevailed 1-0 in a game played at night in a thick fog, with
Marlen Reyes scoring the game's lone goal in the 55th minute. The early years of the series were dominated by Lakeland, which won the first five meetings in this series that started in 2001.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at St. Norbert 4-0 Wednesday
The Muskies hung in for a while but the Green Knights eventually pulled away in both teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener. St. Norbert scored the match's first goal with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, and the homestanding Green Knights added second half goals in the 49th, 70th and 75th minutes.
Ingrid Steinbock made 10 saves in goal as SNC finished with a 24-3 shots advantage. Marlen and
Alondra Reyes combined for all three of Lakeland's shot attempts.
Concordia Chicago last time out: Won at Rockford 1-0 Wednesday
The Cougars continued to win close games and continued to shut down opponents in their wins in taking their NACC opener. Natalie Flores scored the contest's only goal at 60:17 of the match and Brooke Sheriff made four saves to earn the shutout. Concordia won by a shutout for the fifth time this season.
The Cougars enter with a 5-3 overall record and have already topped their win total from all of last year. CUC is off to its best start in 10 years after posting a 3-12-3 overall record a year ago and a 4-7-2 NACC record to tie for ninth in the league.
